Sexual Healing (English for Sexual Healing ) is a song by Marvin Gaye in 1982, that from him, Odell Brown was written and David Ritz. It appeared on the album Midnight Love and was released on September 30, 1982.
Background and story
In 1981 Gaye moved from Los Angeles via Honolulu to London , struggling with fear of the punishment for failure to pay alimony. As noted in his memoirs, he felt both unloved and disrespected by his homeland.
After meeting his friend Freddy Cousseart, Gaye moved to Ostend , Belgium , where he tried to continue his musical career with a newly signed contract with Columbia Records . After his drug withdrawal, he went on tour. When, after the last concert, a melody in reggae style came to mind as a catchy tune, he made the rough version of Sexual Healing in Belgium with his keyboardist Odell Brown and the Rolling Stone critic David Ritz, with whom Gaye was also friends . Gaye felt inspired by pornographic comics to expand the lyrics.
In 1984, Cousseart claimed that he wrote the song himself and sued Gaye on it. The trial in the United States could not be ended due to Gaye's death and due to a lack of evidence, Cousseart's testimony could not be proven.
Sexual Healing was recorded in Ohain , Belgium at the Midnight Love session in 1982. The quiet part of the backing vocals comes from Harvey Fuqua , an early mentor of Gayes, and Gordon Banks also sang in the background. The instruments used for the drums were a Roland TR-808 , a synthesizer and a rhythm guitar.
