Choi Seung-hyun ( Korean 최승현 ; born November 4, 1987 in Seoul , South Korea ), better known as TOP , is a South Korean pop musician , songwriter , producer , actor and member of the boy group Big Bang .

biography

TOP was born on November 4th, 1987 in Seoul and became interested in hip-hop at an early age . He had been friends with Kwon Ji-yong since he was a child ; they were neighbors and met regularly to dance and rap. After TOP moved away, they lost sight of each other until G-Dragon heard of YG Entertainment's plans to start a boy band. He then contacted TOP who was active as the underground rapper Tempo at the time . TOP was initially rejected by YG Entertainment because it was perceived as "too chubby". Within 40 days he lost 20 kg and six months later he reapplied and was accepted.

The name TOP ( 탑 ) comes from the singer Se7en . Big Bang finally made its debut on August 19, 2006 at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena during the YG Family 10th Year Concert .

2007–2010: Solo career, GD & T.OP and acting

In April 2007, TOP, G-Dragon and Taeyang were featured on Lexy's single Super Fly . He was also the first Big Bang member to act as an actor. He starred in the drama I Am Sam as the best fighter in the Chae Musin school. He then became the presenter for MBC's show! Music Core . In 2009, he played the hit man Vick in the television series Iris . With G-Dragon and Taeyang he recorded the song Hallelujah for the soundtrack of the series. At the end of November 2009 he played with Seungri in the film 19-Nineteen .

In the meantime he was preparing for his solo debut. He performed his solo song Turn It Up during a Big Bang concert . The single rose to the 2 of the Gaon Charts .

In December 2010 TOP released an album with G-Dragon . The album includes three singles, High High , Oh Yeah and Knock Out , which were released prior to the album. The three songs took the first three places in the South Korean charts. With the release on December 24, 2010, the album GD & TOP also rose to number one on the Gaon Charts .

Since 2017: conscription and marijuana scandal

In February 2017, TOP began his 21-month military service . In June of that year, a criminal investigation began against TOP after he smoked marijuana . On July 20, TOP was sentenced to two years probation.
