history

The Philippine Daily Inquirer was founded on December 9th, 1985, towards the end of the military dictatorship under Ferdinand Marcos , by the editor Eugenia Apóstol , the columnist Max Solivén and Betty Go-Belmonte, the wife of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte. It is regarded as the successor to the weekly published Philippine Inquirer , also founded in 1985, and the weekly tabloid Mr & Ms Special Edition , while the motivation behind the Philippine Inquirer is the coverage of the trial of 25 Filipino soldiers who were accused of aiding and abetting the murder of opposition leader Benigno "Ninoy “Aquino , who was killed at Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983, served the Mr. & Mrs. Special Edition magazine as a medium against the dictatorship.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer's original budget was one million pesos and had a circulation of 30,000 a day. One of the main topics was the coverage of the Corazón Aquino election campaign during the 1986 Philippine presidential elections and the popular revolution that followed in the same year. The slogan, "Balanced News, Fearless Views," was added in January 1986 after the newspaper held a competition asking readers to create a slogan for the newspaper. The newspaper's longtime editor-in-chief was Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc from June 14, 1991 until her death in December 2015 . Jose Ma was her successor on February 2, 2016. Nolasco appointed. Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc herself had previously proposed her as her successor, as she intended to retire after the presidential elections in May 2016. Nolasco's journalistic career began in 1979 as a reporter for the now defunct newspaper BusinessDay. From 1985, when he was founded, he worked for the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

In addition to the print edition, the newspaper has also been present on the Internet since October 27, 1997 with the online platform inquirer.net .

The mascot of the Philippine Daily Inquirer is the water buffalo Guyito . It first appeared in 1985 as part of a comic strip by Inquirer artist Jess Abrera. Due to its great popularity among readers, the then nameless water buffalo quickly found its permanent place in the newspaper and regularly provided news and current topics with sometimes cheeky comments. He finally got his name Guyito at the end of 1996 as part of a competition in which the readers of the children's newspaper Junior Inquirer were asked to submit name suggestions. Today, Guyito is featured both on the website and in the print edition of the Daily Philippine Inquirer.

today

According to a survey made by the market research company AC Nielsen in 2015, the Philippine Daily Inquirer achieved a market share of 52.7% among the most widely read daily newspapers in the Philippines, followed by the Manila Bulletin with 34.3%.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer is now the main company and namesake of the Inquirer Group (Inquirer Group of Companies). The sister companies include:

  • Inquirer Publications - Publisher of the nation's published tabloid Bandera and regionally in Cebu appearing daily newspaper Cebu Daily News
  • Hinge Inquirer Publication HIP - the magazine division of the Inquirer Group with publications such as Pinnacle , Multisport Philippines , Turista and others.
  • Inquirer.net - the Inquirer Group's online platform with online news, videos and comments on current topics
  • Radyo Inquirer - a radio station operated by Trans-Radio Broadcasting Corporation, which among other things broadcasts Inquirer messages
  • DAG Xpress Courier Inc. - a delivery service for publications and subscriptions, invoices, as well as advertising mail and catalogs. In addition to the inquirer companies, other newspapers also use this delivery service.
  • Print Town Group - today the largest privately owned printer in the Philippines, consisting of three individual companies
  • Megamobile - a provider of content, surveys, advertising and also developer of apps for smartphones focused on mobile devices

Since the early 1990s, the Inquirer group of companies has been majority owned by the Rufino-Prieto family clan. In the years 2010 to 2013, the annual turnover of the group of companies, which is mainly focused on print media, fell by almost 40%, following the trend of a global decline in traditional print products. At the end of 2017, this majority stake was sold to the Philippine economic magnate Ramon Ang. According to the then CEO Marixi Prieto, this was a strategic decision to open up new growth opportunities for the group of companies. Critics also see ongoing attacks by the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte for critical reporting on him as a possible motive behind the sale.

Filipino of the Year

The Philippine Daily Inquirer has named Filipino of the Year every year since 1991 . Here the editors of the newspaper choose a person who, in their opinion, has made a positive contribution to the life of the nation in order to honor them. Living individuals are usually awarded the title, but in a few cases the award has already been awarded posthumously or entire groups of people have been awarded. The former president Corazon Aquino and the professional boxer and politician Manny Pacquiao have already received the award twice.
