Profile in the BoxRec database |
Manny Pacquiao (born December 17, 1978 in Kibawe , actually Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao ) is a Filipino professional boxer and politician . Pacquiao is the first and currently only professional boxer in the history of global boxing to become a recognized boxing world champion in seven weight classes . He is considered one of the best boxers of his time. The US magazine Time included him in its ranking of the 100 most influential personalities for the first time in 2009 .
Start of professional career in 1995
Flyweight
The southpaw Pacquiao was 1995 with an amateur balance of 60-4 flyweight professional boxer. With his aggressive fighting style and great punching power, he quickly became popular. His own ability to take and his physical condition were considered weaknesses. In 1996 he lost in his twelfth professional fight against his internationally unknown compatriot Rustico Torrecampo by knockout in the third round.
On December 4, 1998 he won in Phuttamonthon (Thailand) by a knockout in the eighth round over the Thai defending champion Chatchai Sasakul the World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight title, which also attracted attention in the USA. Sasakul was considered the best boxer in this weight class after his fights against the Russian Yuri Arbachakov and had lost only on points in his only defeat to Arbachakov.
Pacquiao had big problems to keep the weight class, which contributed to the fact that he surprisingly lost his title in 1999 by knockout in the third round to the Thai Medgoen Singsurat .
Super bantamweight
Subsequently, he rose to three weight classes in the super bantamweight. He also had to go to the ground against the unknown Australian Nedal Hussein in 2000, but in the end he won by a technical knockout in the tenth round, as the referee stopped the fight because of a bleeding laceration over Hussein's right eye. Hussein felt disadvantaged because it would have taken too long to count down during the rainfall, but he was denied a rematch, which he called for. On June 23, 2001 Pacquiao fought for the first time in the USA and won the IBF world championship in semi-featherweight in Las Vegas against the South African Lehlohonolo Ledwaba by technical knockout in the sixth round. With this spectacular fight, broadcast live by HBO in the USA , he also established himself on the US market. He was then looked after by the well-known manager Shelly Finkel and trained by Freddie Roach . A title union fight with the WBO title holder Agapito Sánchez ended in November 2001 after an injury-related abort in the sixth round with a draw. The fight was ended on the advice of the ring doctor because of a laceration over Pacquiao's right eye as a result of an accidental headbutt. After counting the scores, Pacquiao and Sánchez were each ahead of one judge, the third judge saw the fight balanced up to this point.
Featherweight
After three more title defenses, he resigned his IBF title and switched to featherweight. There he beat the Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera surprisingly in his first fight in this class on November 15, 2003 by technical knockout, after Barrera's trainer entered the ring in the eleventh round and thus triggered the break off of the fight. Barrera was rated the strongest featherweight by Ring Magazine at the time . Because of this performance, he got the chance in his next fight to compete against the highly regarded Juan Manuel Márquez , IBF and WBA featherweight title holder , at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Although he got several knockdowns in the fight, he only achieved a draw because he collapsed conditionally at the end of the fight.
Super featherweight
He then rose to the super featherweight division and lost in March 2005 to Erik Morales over twelve rounds on points, his first defeat in six years. In January 2006 there was then a rematch against the Mexican, whom Pacquiao was able to win through technical knockout in the tenth round. This was the first time that Morales was knocked out in his 13-year professional career. After Pacquiao's points win over the long-time WBC semi-featherweight champion Óscar Larios in Manila , a third encounter with Morales was scheduled for November 18, 2006. This time he was able to assert himself even more clearly and won by knockout in the third round. The fight was bought by HBO's 350,000 customers, generated $ 17.5 million in PPV revenue, and is considered the most lucrative fight of all time under the lightweight.
After a knockout success against the undefeated but also unknown Jorge Solís , again a Mexican, there was a rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera on October 6, 2007. Pacquiao was able to prevail over twelve laps clearly on points. With the victory he had won the right to challenge the WBC world champion. On March 15, 2008 he went to a rematch and title fight against WBC World Champion Juan Manuel Márquez. The second duel between Márquez and Pacquiao also went over the full distance of twelve laps and was rated by a narrow, controversial victory for Pacquiao. Also in this fight Pacquiao managed a knockdown, which decided the fight for him due to the narrow scores.
lightweight
After beating Marquez, Pacquiao switched to the lightweight, to finally compete on June 28, 2008 against the local title holder of the WBC David Díaz . Pacquiao won this fight with a difficult knockout in the ninth round. He also became the first Asian boxer to become world champion in four different weight classes. On December 6, 2008 there was a lucrative non-title fight against boxing legend Óscar de la Hoya . The fight against the approximately ten centimeters taller de la Hoya took place in welterweight (two classes above lightweight). Pacquiao was so superior, especially in the seventh and eighth rounds, that de la Hoya gave up at the end of the eighth round and ended his career.
Manny Pacquiao played his next fight on May 2, 2009 against the popular British light welterweight Ricky Hatton . The fight was actually considered relatively even in the run-up, but here too Pacquiao was clearly superior and outclassed the British. He scored twice in the first round and ended the fight in the second round with a heavy knockout.
Then Pacquiao went again in the welterweight division against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto , who held the WBO world title in this weight class at that time. Pacquiao won the fight on November 14, 2009 by technical knockout in the twelfth round. On November 13, 2010 Pacquiao was able to win the vacant light middleweight title according to the version of the WBC by a clear point victory over the previously highly rated and 11 cm taller Mexican Antonio Margarito .
Welterweight
After Pacquiao's win against Cotto, a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. was negotiated in Las Vegas in March 2010. After disputes about the division of the combat exchange and especially the doping controls, the duel did not take place. Mayweather requested unannounced blood tests from the US anti-doping agency USADA , while Pacquiao refused to take blood tests less than 30 days before the fight. Compromise proposals made 14 or 24 days before the fight without blood tests were also not accepted by either side. Due to Pacquiao's refusal to agree to this type of doping control, which is not compulsory in professional boxing in the USA, Mayweather assumed that he was taking performance-enhancing drugs. After the fight was canceled, Pacquiao instead went on March 13, 2010 in Arlington against Joshua Clottey , former IBF welterweight title holder, and defeated the Ghanaian clearly on points over twelve rounds.
Super welterweight
On November 13, 2010 Pacquiao joined the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas , Texas , again he rose to a weight class in the super welterweight (light middleweight). His opponent was the Mexican Antonio Margarito , who became famous through a hand bandage scandal , it was about the vacant WBC belt. Pacquiao won the fight unanimously on points in front of 50,000 spectators over 12 rounds. On May 7, 2011 he defended his title by unanimously winning points over the former multiple world champion Shane Mosley . The fight almost never happened because a few hours before the fight, Pacquiao was involved in a traffic accident. One of his bodyguards could not brake in time on the way from a church service to the hotel and crashed into the car in front of him in which Pacquiao was sitting. However, he quickly gave the all-clear and went to battle.
Return to welterweight
On November 12, 2011 he stepped in a title defense fight for the third time against Juan Manuel Márquez in the ring, who had been promoted to welterweight. He won this fight in Las Vegas only controversially by split point decision. On June 9, 2012, Pacquiao lost his WBO title at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas to Timothy Bradley after twelve rounds by decision. After a re-evaluation of the fight on June 20, 2012, the five judges commissioned by the WBO voted for Pacquiao and declared the judge's judgment of June 9, 2012 to be false. The misjudgment persisted, however, and a rematch was planned instead. On December 8, 2012 he lost in his fourth duel against Juan Manuel Márquez surprisingly and spectacularly by knockout in the sixth round.
On November 23, 2013 he defeated Brandon Ríos (31-1) in Macau unanimously on points. On April 14, 2014 he won the rematch against Timothy Bradley (31-0) unanimously and was WBO world champion again.
After several years of negotiations, Pacquiao took on the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the welterweight title of the three most important associations on May 2nd, 2015 at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas . He lost the unspectacular fight unanimously on points, which was a surprising verdict for many experts, and with it his WBO title. Mayweather and Pacquiao received record battle markets of approximately $ 150 million and $ 100 million, respectively. Tickets cost between $ 1,000 and $ 10,000, with a total of $ 74 million from admission prices. TV viewers had to pay 89–99 dollars for transmission on American pay TV, and 20–30 euros for Sky in Germany .
In October 2015 he announced that he would end his career in 2016. Since April 9, 2016, he has been fighting other fights (balance 5-1, as of July 20, 2019). On January 19, 2019, the now 40-year-old defended his WBA welterweight title , which he won in July 2018, unanimously against the 29-year-old American Adrien Broner in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand in front of 13,000 spectators . On July 20, 2019, he also won the WBA Superchampion title with a 2-1 judge's vote against the previously undefeated Keith Thurman .
