Tony Canzoneri (born November 6, 1908 in Slidell , Louisiana - † December 9, 1959 in New York City , New York ) was an American boxer .

professional

The Italian-American Canzoneri turned professional in 1925 at the age of 16. At the age of eighteen the Pressure Fighter boxed for the bantamweight world championship of the NBA (forerunner of the World Boxing Association ) against Bud Taylor and lost the rematch.

In 1927 he won the NYSAC featherweight title against a weight-making and therefore indisposed Johnny Dundee and defeated Taylor in a non-title fight. He defended against Benny Bass, lost the title to Andre Routis.

His first bid for lightweight crown failed 1929 Sammy Mandell, but in 1930 he beat Al Singer in the first round heavy KO .

In 1931 he defeated for the light welterweight world title Jackie Berg , who had still outdone him in 1930 (Canzoneri also won a third fight) and defended the lightweight title against Kid Chocolate , which he inflicted his first knockout loss in 1933. This made Canzoneri the second fighter in boxing history to become world champion in three weight classes.

He was defeated by Barney Ross in 1931, as well as by Johnny Jadick in 1932, twice in title fights. In 1933, however, he scored from Baby Arizmendi and was able to win back the vacant lightweight title against Lou Ambers in 1935 . In 1934, The Ring magazine named Canzoneri Fighter of the Year.

In 1936 he beat Jadick in a non-title fight, but lost to Ambers in the rematch for the title in 1936 and again in 1937, his last title fight. He also lost to the bigger Jimmy McLarnin on points.

It was now gradually going downhill, after the first and only knockout loss of his career against the undefeated Al "Bummy" Davis, he stopped boxing.

In 1990 Canzoneri was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame . The Ring put him in eighth place in the list of the best lightweight boxers of all time.
