career

The Cuban (100-0 (86 KOs)), unbeaten as an amateur, began his professional career in his homeland in 1927. From the following year he boxed in New York , where he beat Fidel LaBarba and Al Singer in 1929 . He was a counter-boxer with good punching power in the right hand and good taker skills. After 55 wins and a draw, he was defeated in August 1930 for the first time in his career against the nine pound heavier Jackie "Kid" Berg and shortly afterwards in a rematch to LaBarba.

On July 15, 1931 he was NBA super featherweight world champion, but was defeated in November of that year in a lightweight title fight Tony Canzoneri on points. In 1932, after defeating Lew Feldman in October 1932, he was also recognized by the NYSAC as a featherweight world champion and generally as a super featherweight world champion, after he had lost a second time against Berg in July.

By the end of 1933, however, it had passed its zenith. In November he was knocked out again in the second round against Canzoneri, a month later he lost the super featherweight title to Frankie Klick . Finally, in February 1934, the featherweight title was stripped from him by the NYSAC.

He boxed on until 1938, but without fighting for the title. At the end of his career he returned to Cuba and fought his last five fights there. After retiring, he became a boxing coach in Cuba.

The Ring Magazine evaluates him as best Cuban professional boxer of all time. Kid Chocolate was the first Cuban world champion in the history of professional boxing. In 1994 he was inducted into the " International Boxing Hall of Fame ".

The "Sala Polivalente Kid Chocolate" in Havana directly opposite the Capitolio was named after him. The sports hall was designed for the XI. Pan American Games established in 1991. In addition to boxing, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, handball, wrestling and indoor soccer take place there.
