Tommy Loughran (born November 29, 1902 in Philadelphia , † July 7, 1982 in Altoona , Pennsylvania ) was an American boxer.

Career

The counter boxer began his career in 1919. He was very good at defensive boxing but had little punching power. He lost an early fight with a broken rib, but otherwise never lost prematurely below the heavyweight division.

He lost three of five fights against Harry Greb in a win and a draw, he was also subject to Gene Tunney and in 1924 and 1925 Young Stribling .

In 1927, after the end of the "No Decision Era", he was able to become light heavyweight world champion after winning points over Mike McTigue . He then defended the title until 1929, defeating Mickey Walker , James Braddock , Jimmy Slattery , Leo Lomsky and Pete Latzo , among others . He then resigned the title to continue boxing in the heavyweight division.

In his first fight in this weight class, however, he went KO against Jack Sharkey , but was able to defeat Max Baer and Paolino Uzcudun in 1931 . In 1933 he won the rematch against Sharkey.

On March 1, 1934, he got the chance to fight for the world heavyweight title, and was defeated by the almost 40 kg heavier defending champion Primo Carnera on points.

In the next fight he also lost on points against Walter Neusel . He boxed without any notable success until 1937 and then ended his career.

In 1991 Loughran was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
