Carl Frampton (born February 21, 1987 in Belfast ) is a British professional boxer, former world champion of the IBF and WBA super bantamweight, and former world champion of the WBA featherweight. Frampton is the first boxer from Northern Ireland to win world titles in two weight classes and was voted Ring Magazine Boxer of the Year in 2016. In April 2018 he became the WBO interim featherweight champion.

Career

Carl Frampton can look back on a long amateur career. In 2003 he won the silver medal at the 1st European School Championships in Italy and in 2004 a bronze medal at the 2nd Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia . In 2005 he won another bronze medal at the 4th Commonwealth Championships in Scotland . In 2007, the silver medal followed at the 5th EU Championships in Ireland .

In 2005 he won the Irish Championships for the first time. After he was only able to reach third place in 2006, 2007 and 2008, he again won the Irish Championships in 2009 by beating David Joyce in the final .

He turned pro in 2009 and won his debut early in the second round. After six more victories, he won the Celtic Championship of the British Boxing Association in the second round against Gavin Reid in December 2010 . He was able to defend the title and in September 2011 secured the Commonwealth Championship by TKO in the fourth round against Mark Quon. He then defended the title twice early against Kris Hughes and Prosper Ankrah.

In May 2012, his international rise followed by winning the IBF Intercontinental Championship against the undefeated Mexican Raúl Hirales. In September 2012 he also defeated the Canadian ex-world champion Steve Molitor by TKO in the sixth round. Until then, Molitor had only suffered two defeats in 36 fights, had won the IBF World Championship title twice and defended it six times.

In February 2013 he boxed for the European Championship ( EBU ) against the Spaniard Francisco "Kiko" Martinez and won through TKO in the ninth round. He defended the title in October 2013 by knockout against the French Jeremy Parodi. In April 2014 followed a knockout victory in the second round against the Mexican and former WBO / WBA world champion Hugo Cázares.

On September 6, 2014 he boxed again against Kiko Martinez, who had meanwhile become the reigning IBF world champion, and won by unanimous decision. He won his first title defense early against Chris Avalos in February 2015. In July 2015, he beat Alejandro González junior unanimously on points.

In a title unification fight in February 2016, he defeated the WBA (super) world champion Scott Quigg (31-0) on points. Quigg boxed with a broken jaw from the fourth round. In July 2016 he won a points against Léo Santa Cruz (32-0) and thus won the (super) world title of the WBA in featherweight.

On January 28, 2017, he lost for the first time in his professional career when he had to surrender his world championship belt to Léo Santa Cruz due to a point defeat in the rematch . He played his next fight on November 18, 2017 in Belfast against the Mexican Horacio García (33-3) and won by unanimous decision. It was his first fight under his new promoter Frank Warren and management MTK Global.

On April 21, 2018, he defeated the Filipino Nonito Donaire (38-4) unanimously on points and became interim world champion of the WBO. He won his first title defense on August 18, 2018 in Belfast by TKO against the unbeaten Australian Luke Jackson (16-0).

On December 22nd, 2018 he lost on points to his compatriot, IBF World Champion Josh Warrington (27-0). He then played his next fight in November 2019 and won against Tyler McCreary (16-0).
