Josh Warrington (* 14. November 1990 in Leeds ) is a British professional boxer and current IBF world champion in the featherweight . The Ring Magazine takes him at No. 1 in the world rankings (as of 2020).

Amateur career

Josh Warrington started boxing at the age of seven and had his first fight at the age of eleven. In 2009 he won a bronze medal in the lightweight at the English championships when he was eliminated in the semifinals against Thomas Stalker . After 48 amateur fights, he switched to the professional camp at the age of 18.

Professional career

Josh Warrington is managed by Steve Wood and coached by his father Sean O'Hagan. Frank Warren has been his promoter since 2016 . Warrington made his professional debut on October 31, 2009. After twelve wins in a row, he won the English featherweight championship against Chris Male on November 9, 2012 (match record: 11-0). After two title defenses, he also won the Commonwealth featherweight title on November 2, 2013 against Samir Mouneimne (12-0). In April 2014 he defended the title against Rendall Munroe (28-4), who boxed twice against Scott Quigg for the WBA World Championship in 2012 .

On May 21, 2014, he also won the British featherweight championship against Martin Lindsay (21-2) and became the new EBU European featherweight champion on October 4, 2014 by beating Davide Dieli (15-3). Against Dennis Tubieron (19-3) he won the title of International Featherweight Champion of the WBC on April 11, 2015 .

In September 2015 he defeated the Australian Joel Brunker (28-1) and in April 2016 the Japanese Hisashi Amagasa (30-5), 2014 WBA and WBO World Championship challenger from Guillermo Rigondeaux . In July 2016, he was also able to defeat the Irish Patrick Hyland (31-2), who had fought against Gary Russell junior in his last fight for the WBC World Championship .

In 2017 he won fights against former IBF world champion Kiko Martínez (36-7) and European champion Dennis Ceylan (18-0). This made him the mandatory challenger of IBF World Champion Lee Selby (26-1). He defeated this on May 19, 2018 on points.

On December 22, 2018, he defeated Carl Frampton (26-1) by unanimous decision on points and was thus able to defend his world title for the first time. The fight was voted Fight of the Year by the British Boxing Board of Control . He played his second title defense on June 15, 2019 against Abdul Awad (26-0), aka "Kid Galahad", and won on points. He won his third title defense on October 12, 2019 by TKO in the second round against Frenchman Sofiane Takoucht (35-3).
