David Oliver Joyce (born February 12, 1987 in Mullingar ) is an Irish professional boxer in super bantamweight .

Amateur career

David Oliver Joyce comes from an Irish boxer family. He is a cousin of boxers Joe Ward and John Joe Joyce , and brother of boxer Hughie Joyce. David Oliver has boxed since 1995 and was a member of St. Michaels Boxing Club Athy . He won a bronze medal in the bantamweight division at the European Schools Championships in Rome in 2003 when he was knocked out of the semifinals by Paul Turcitu (17: 17+).

At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago he was defeated in the first fight against Davi Sousa, but won the EU championships in Władysławowo in 2008 with victories against Valentin Stoytschew, Hicham Ziouti and Mirsad Ahmeti. At the European Championships in Liverpool in 2008 he beat Joseph Murray , but was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Vasyl Lomatschenko . At the European Olympic qualification in Athens in 2008 , he narrowly lost in the quarterfinals to Bashir Hassan (17:19).

In 2009 he again won the EU championships in Odense with victories against Dennis Ceylan , Iain Weaver , Michał Chudecki and Sandro Schaer. He then started at the 2009 World Championships in Milan , where he defeated Wuttichai Masuk , but failed against Óscar Valdez . The 2011 World Championships in Baku , he finished with a brief second round defeat to Jai Bhagwan (30:32).

In 2012, he failed in the European Olympic qualification in Trabzon against Evaldas Petrauskas in the quarter-finals after he had previously defeated Joseph Cordina and Artur Bril . In 2014, he again secured gold at the EU championships in Sofia after successfully beating Mahmoud Khattab, Dawid Michelus, Edgaras Skurdelis and Otar Eranossian .

From 2014 he took part in the newly created AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) tournament mode and achieved two wins ( Domenico Valentino , Artur Bril ) and two defeats ( Berik Äbdirachmanow , Dmitri Poljanski ) in the first season . In 2015/16 he lost to Xurshid Tojiboyev , but defeated Robson Conceição .

In 2016 he took part in the European Olympic qualification in Samsun . He defeated Otar Eranossian and Wasgen Safarjanz , lost in the semi-finals to Joseph Cordina , but won the fight for third place against Volkan Gökçek. So he was able to take part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and defeated Andrique Allisop in the first duel, but was then eliminated in the round of 16 against Albert Selimow .

In addition, David Oliver Joyce is Irish Champion in bantamweight in 2005 and 2006, featherweight in 2007 and 2008, and lightweight in 2014 and 2016. In 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 he was runner-up.

Professional career

He won his professional debut on June 17, 2017 in Belfast against Gábor Kovács. In his tenth fight, he won the WBO European Featherweight Championship on April 5, 2019 . In October 2019 he lost the title to Leigh Wood from Britain after a TKO defeat.

On February 1, 2020, he again won the WBO European Championship, this time in super bantamweight, by a TKO win against Lee Haskins .
