Athy
Athy ( Irish : Baile Átha Í ) is a town in County Kildare in the Republic of Ireland with 9919 inhabitants (as of 2016). It lies at the intersection of the River Barrow with the Grand Canal .
history
The city developed from a 12th century Anglo-Norman settlement into an important military outpost of the "Pale", the English possessions in Ireland. The first council constitution was created in the 16th century. The town hall was built in the early 18th century. The construction of the Grand Canal in 1791 and the railway connection in 1846 show the importance of the city in the past. In the anti-war song " Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye ", the city becomes the home of a soldier.
