Moth from Ardscull
The moth of Ardscull ( English Moat (e) of Ardscull , Irish Móta Ard Scol ) is seven kilometers northeast of Athy , in County Kildare in Ireland . It was declared a National Monument .
The motte was erected by the Normans in the 13th century . It is mentioned in historical sources in 1286 when it burned down. In the 15th century it was expanded by the FitzGeralds . The now tree-lined round hill is about 10.0 meters high and surrounded by a moat and wall. There are traces of a wall on the north side.
Nearby, the army of Robert I of Scotland (Robert Bruce) defeated a strong English force in 1315. A plaque next to the road commemorates the fourth Gordon Bennett Cup from 1903, the race track of which passed the Motte.
