Joseph "Joe" Cordina (* 1. December 1991 in Cardiff , Wales ) is a British professional boxer in the lightweight .

Amateur career

Cordina is Welsh champion in 2013 and 2014. In 2012 he won a bronze medal at the first U22 European Championships in Kaliningrad . After victories against Airin Ismetow from Bulgaria and Artur Bril from Germany, he narrowly lost to Maxim Schmigljew from Russia (12:13) in the semi-finals.

In April 2014 he won the Gee-Bee Tournament in Finland, defeating Artyoms Ramlavs from Latvia, Vyacheslav Schipunow from Russia and Chad Milnes from New Zealand. In July 2014, he won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow . He beat Pat McCormack from England, David Gauthier from Canada and again Chad Milnes before he was eliminated in the semifinals against Charles Flynn from Scotland. In November 2014 he won against Roland Gálos from Hungary, Vadim Ivaniuc from Moldova and Pavlo Ishchenko from Ukraine through and thus won the gold medal at the Golden Belt Tournament in Romania.

In August 2015 he won the European Championships in Samokov . After another preliminary round win against Roland Gálos (3-0), he defeated Dawid Michelus (3-0) from Poland in the round of 16. After a surprising quarter-final victory by tKo in the first round against the Italian Domenico Valentino , he came into the medal ranks and defeated the Dutchman Enrico Lacruz (3-0) in the final . He decided the final fight against the Georgian Otar Eranossian 3-0 for himself.

At the 2015 World Championships in Doha , he defeated the Australian Josh Keirl and the North Korean Kwon Chol-Guk, but lost to the Brazilian Robson Conceição in the quarter-finals . In February 2016 he won the Bocskai tournament in Hungary, defeating Sofiane Oumiha in the final. At the European Olympic qualification in April 2016 in Samsun, he fought against Miklós Varga , Domenico Valentino and David Joyce for a place in the 2016 Olympic Games . There he defeated Charly Suarez in the preliminary round , but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Xurshid Tojiboyev .

Professional career

He made his professional debut in Liverpool on April 22, 2017, beating Jose Aguilar prematurely. In March 2018 he won the "International" title of the WBA , in August 2018 the Commonwealth title, in April 2019 the British Championship and in November 2019 the "Continental" title of the WBA.
