Pat McCormack (* 8. June 1995 in Sunderland ) is a British boxer in the welterweight division . He is the twin brother of boxer Luke McCormack .

Career

McCormack won the 2011 European Junior Championships in Hungary and the World Junior Championships in Kazakhstan . He was then nominated by the BBC for Young Sports Personality of the Year . He is also a multiple English and British Champion in the Juniors and Youth.

In 2014 he was English champion in adults and took part in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland , where he was narrowly eliminated from eventual European champion Joseph Cordina . In 2015 he won the English and British championships. He then started at the European Championships in Bulgaria and reached the final against Fatih Keleş , Johan Orozco and Evaldas Petrauskas , in which he was defeated by the eventual world champion Vitaly Dunaizew . He was also subject to this in the round of 16 at the 2015 World Championships in Qatar .

In March 2016 he won the Chemistry Cup in Germany. He defeated among others Wuttichai Masuk and Armen Sakarjan . After winning the global Olympic qualification tournament in Baku in June 2016 , he was eligible to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . He had defeated Thulasi Tharumalingam from Qatar, Lasha Guruli from Georgia, Hassan Amzile from France, Manoj Kumar from India and Richardson Hitchins from Haiti. At the Olympic Games he won the preliminary round against Abylaichan Schüssipow , but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Yasniel Toledo .

At the 2017 European Championships in Kharkiv he won the silver medal after losing to Abass Baraou in the final , having previously defeated Saimonas Banys, Adolpe Sylva, Sergey Sobylinskiy and Jewhen Barabanow . He qualified for the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg , where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Shaxram Gʻiyosov .

He won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia and the 2018 EU Championships in Spain. In 2019 he won another gold medal at the European Games in Minsk . He then took part in the 2019 World Championships in Yekaterinburg , where he was defeated in the final against Andrei Samkowoi and became vice world champion. In the previous fights he had defeated Aidan Walsh, Lasha Guruli, Sewonrets Okazawa and Bobo-Usmon Baturov. For these successes, McCormack received the Ken Jones Award for Great Britain's amateur boxer of the year in October 2019 .

World Series

He has been competing in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) for the British team British Lionhearts since 2016 and has so far remained undefeated in all of his six fights.
