Abass Baraou (born October 28, 1994 in Aalen ) is a German boxer of Togolese descent in the light middleweight division .

Amateur career

Abass Baraou learned boxing at Ring Frei Oberhausen and attended sports boarding schools in Münster and Berlin .

National

Baraou became national U21 champion in 2013 and is German champion of the elite class in 2014, 2015 and 2016. He was also German team champion in 2016 with Motor Babelsberg .

International

In 2012 he took part in the World Youth Championships in Armenia and reached the round of 16 with two wins, where he was just defeated by the starter from Turkey.

In May 2014 he also surprisingly won the chemistry cup and was also voted the best technician of the tournament. He had defeated Slawa Kerber , Michael Gunitzberger, Steven Donnelly and Liu Wei .

In 2015 he reached second place at the Chemistry Cup when he only lost to Bjambyn Tüwschinbat in the final . At the European Games in Baku in 2015 , he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the eventual winner Pərviz Bağırov and thus missed a medal placement.

To take part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil , he started at the qualification tournament in Baku. There he defeated Josh Nyika, Eumir Marcial and Mirsomuhamed Bachtiyar before he was eliminated in the last decisive battle against Balázs Bácskai . In March 2016 he had won the chemistry cup again and this time also defeated Bjambyn Tüwschinbat. His semi- final opponent Andrei Samkowoi and his final opponent Araik Marutjan had not started the fight.

In 2017 he won the chemistry cup and was again voted best technician. In June 2017 he started at the European Championships in Ukraine and surprisingly won the gold medal after beating Miroslav Kapuler, Alexandros Tsanikidis, Vincenzo Mangiacapre , Vasile Belous and Pat McCormack . He then started at the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg, where he made it to the semi-finals against Juan Ramón Solano and Bjambyn Tüwschinbat and only narrowly eliminated from the Cuban Olympic champion Roniel Iglesias with a bronze medal.

Professional career

In March 2018, Baraou signed a professional contract with Sauerland Event . He won his debut early on April 28, 2018 in Offenburg in the fourth round against the unbeaten Artur Müller (record: 5-0). In his only second fight on June 2, 2018 in Hanover , he won the German championship title in light middleweight by a unanimous victory over the title holder Denis Krieger (14-5). In October 2018 he defended the title early against Robert Maess (22-1). In December 2018 he was able to defeat Sasha Jengojan (41-5) unanimously on points.

On February 16, 2019, he defeated the former IBF World Champion Carlos Molina (29-10) and thus won the title of WBC International Champion. He achieved another victory on May 4, 2019 through TKO against the South African Ali Funeka (40-10), who was the 2009 and 2010 World Cup challenger for the IBF, WBA and WBO associations . In September 2019 he defeated the undefeated Egyptian Abdelghani Saber (8-0) and in October 2019 the British John O'Donnell (33-2).

In January 2020 he won prematurely against the Mexican Abraham Juárez (16-4). Against Jack Culcay-Keth (28-4) he just lost on August 28, 2020 by a split decision on points.
