Balázs Imre Bácskai (born January 29, 1988 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian boxer. He became European welterweight champion in 2010.

Amateur career

Balázs Imre Bácskai was Hungarian junior light welterweight champion in 2006, and Hungarian runner-up in light welterweight in 2006 and 2007; he lost it in both finals against Gyula Káté . In 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 he won the Hungarian welterweight championships, and in 2014 the Hungarian middleweight championships.

His first international appearance was in June 2003 at the Cadet World Championships in Bucharest , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Wadim Marcow from Moldova. Three months later he won a bronze medal in featherweight at the European Cadet Championships in Kaunas . After victories against Michal Bambas from the Czech Republic and Eugeniu Iwanow from Moldova, he lost in the semifinals to the Russian Nikita Schdanow. In November of the same year he took part in the European Schools Championships in Rome , where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Amir Khan from England.

In 2005 he lost at the Junior European Championships in Tallinn against Alexis Vastine from France. In June 2006 he won the 1st EU Junior Championships in Rome in the light welterweight division . He prevailed against Vincenzo Mangiacapre from Italy, Michel Tavares from France and Łukasz Polcyn from Poland. In September of the same year, he was also able to win the Junior World Championships in Agadir in the same weight class , defeating Branislav Jovičić from Serbia, Kazbek Batanasov from Kazakhstan, Ualace Almeida from Brazil, Idriss Mousaid from Morocco and Artem Saitsew from Russia.

At the European Olympic qualification in Athens in 2008, he suffered a defeat in the round of 16 against Jaoid Chiguer from France. He was also eliminated from Turkey's Abdülkadir Köroğlu in the second preliminary round at this year's European Championships in Liverpool .

In 2009 he won the EU championships in Odense with victories against Jaoid Chiguer from France, Orhan Öztürk from the Netherlands and William McLaughlin from Ireland . He also took part in the 2009 World Championships in Milan , where he defeated Vasile Belous from Moldova and Pedro Lima from Brazil before losing to Andrei Samkowoi from Russia in the round of 16 .

In June 2010 he won the European Championships in Moscow . He beat Patrick Wojcicki from Germany, Egidijus Kavaliauskas from Lithuania, Ionuț Gheorghe from Romania, Taras Schelestjuk from Ukraine and Alexis Vastine from France.

At the 2011 World Championships in Baku , he was eliminated against Errol Spence from the USA. At the European Olympic qualification in 2012 in Trabzon , he lost again to Abdülkadir Köroğlu. At the European Championships 2013 in Minsk , he lost his first fight against Tamerlan Abdullajew from Azerbaijan. Also at the World Championships in Almaty in October 2013 , he lost in the second preliminary round just on points against Gabriel Maestre from Venezuela.

At the EU Championships in Bulgaria in 2014, he was only eliminated in the semi-finals against Michael O'Reilly from Ireland and thus won bronze in the middleweight division. In the European Olympic qualification in 2016, he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Vincenzo Mangiacapre . At the global Olympic qualification tournament in 2016, however, he won a starting place for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , after defeating Oliver Flodin from Sweden, Paul Kroll from the USA, Abass Baraou from Germany and Pavel Kostromin from Belarus. In Rio, however, he was eliminated in the first fight against Frenchman Souleymane Cissokho .
