Onur Şipal (born March 17, 1989 ) is a Turkish boxer and Olympic participant from 2008 and 2016. His brother Önder Şipal is also a successful boxer.

Career

Youth and Juniors

The 1.72 m tall left boom won the 2003 European Schools Championships in Rome (weight class up to 50 kg) with a final victory over future professional world champion Carl Frampton . In 2005 he took third place in featherweight at the European Cadet Championships in Siófok and second place in featherweight at the Cadet World Championships in Liverpool . In 2006 he again won a silver medal in the lightweight at the Junior EU Championships in Rome, where he also managed a victory against John Joyce .

Men

At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , Şipal reached the quarterfinals after victories over Will Tomlinson, Krzysztof Szot and Bekzod Khidirov, which he lost to eventual world champion Frankie Gavin . He finished fifth in the lightweight and qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . There, however, Şipal was defeated in the first fight against José Pedraza from Puerto Rico.

In 2009 he took second place in the light welterweight division (up to 64 kg) at the European student championships in Elista and also second place at the student world championships in Ulaanbaatar , and in 2012 second place in the welterweight division (up to 69 kg) at the World University Championships in Baku .

At the Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan he defeated Serdar Hudaýberdiýew , among others , but lost in the semifinals to Andrei Samkowoi and thus reached 3rd place in the welterweight division. In October of the same year he also won a bronze welterweight medal at the World Combat Games in Saint Petersburg .

At the 2016 Olympics , he was eliminated in the first fight against Simeon Chamow . In the preliminary round of the 2017 European Championships, he lost just 3-2 to Pavel Kostromin .

In 2018 he took part in the Mediterranean Games in Spain and won a bronze welterweight medal after leaving the semi-finals without a fight.

AIBA Pro Boxing

In January 2015, Şipal became APB welterweight champion. This AIBA tournament offered professional boxers the opportunity to qualify for the Summer Olympics for the first time. Previously this was only possible for amateurs. Şipal defeated the Lithuanian Eimantas Stanionis , the Ukrainian Denis Lasarew and twice Rayton Okwiri from Kenya. This qualified Şipal for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

Onur Şipal fought in the 2010/11 season for the "Istanbul Bulls" in the World Series of Boxing , where he won two of his four fights, and was also a participant in the 2003 European Cadet Championship in Lithuania (defeat against Howhannes Danieljan ), European Cadet Championship 2004 in Russia, University World Cup 2008 in Russia, Mediterranean Games 2009 in Italy, World Cup 2009 in Italy, World Cup 2011 in Azerbaijan and the EM 2013 in Belarus (defeat against Araik Marutjan ).
