Frankie Gavin Raymond (* 28. September 1985 in Birmingham ) is a British professional boxer in the welterweight division . As an amateur, he was the 2007 lightweight world champion .

Amateur career

Frankie Gavin is from Birmingham and started boxing there as a teenager. He was a member of the ABC Hall Green Birmingham boxing club and attended Catholic Technology College in his hometown. The southpaw grew up in his club together with the silver medalist of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , Amir Khan .

Frankie Gavin won the 2002 Junior Olympic International Tournament in the USA , beating Ray Robinson, Stephen Smith and Noel Mendoza. In 2003 he also achieved a bronze medal in featherweight at the European Junior Championships in Poland .

In 2005 he lost to Domenico Valentino in the semifinals of the EU championships in Italy and thus won a bronze medal in the lightweight. He won the 2005 Commonwealth Championships in Scotland in the lightweight with a final victory over Thanduxolo Dyani. For this he was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2006 European Championships in Bulgaria against Oleksandr Klyuchko.

In 2006 he won the Commonwealth Games in Australia in the lightweight , where he was able to defeat Ovidiu Bobîrnat, Jai Bhagwan, Rasheed Lawal, Leonardo Zappavigna and Giovanni Frontin. He then started at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago . With wins against Omar Ward from Barbados (demolition), Merei Aqschalow from Kazakhstan (20: 9), Ramal Amanow from Azerbaijan (21:10), Onur Şipal from Turkey (16: 7), Alexei Tishchenko from Russia (19:10 ) and Domenico Valentino from Italy (18:10) he became world champion in lightweight and at the same time England's first amateur world champion in boxing.

He was then qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , but exceeded the weight limit in the weighing there and was therefore not allowed to compete. In the light welterweight division he won the EU championships in 2008 in Poland against Boris Georgiew , Slawa Kerber , Marcin Łęgowski and Gyula Káté .

He is also English champion in 2005 and 2007, defeating Thomas Stalker in the 2007 final . In total, he won 100 of 121 amateur fights.

Professional career

Gavin joined the pro in February 2009 and was coached by Tom Chaney and Max McCracken. He was under contract with Frank Warren until 2014 , since then he has been promoted by Eddie Hearn.

In September 2010 he was against Michael Kelly Irish light welterweight champion. By winning points against Young Mutley (balance: 29-5), he was also intercontinental champion of the WBO welterweight on May 21, 2011 . On November 1, 2012, he won unanimously on points against Junior Witter (41-5) and thereby became British welterweight champion. He successfully defended the title against Jason Welborn (11-1), Denton Vassell (20-0) and David Barnes (27-2), which also made him Commonwealth Champion.

In the fight for the European Championship he lost to Leonard Bundu (30-0) in August 2014 , but again secured the British and Commonwealth Championship in November 2014 against Bradley Skeete (18-0). In the fight for the IBF World Championship in May 2015, he lost to Kell Brook (34-0). In October 2016, he also surprisingly lost to Sam Eggington (18-3).

In November 2018 he lost in the fight for the EBU European Championship by knockout in the fourth round against Kerman Lejarraga (26-0)
