Boris Metodiew Georgiew Bulgarian : Борис Методиев Георгиев; English transcription : Boris Metodiev Georgiev (born December 5, 1982 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian boxer from the Roma minority . He is runner-up European featherweight champion in 2000 and lightweight in 2002, as well as European light welterweight champion in 2006. In addition, he won the 2004 Olympic bronze medal in light welterweight.
Career
The approximately 1.80 m tall, multiple Bulgarian champion won a bronze medal in bantamweight at the 1998 European Cadet Championships in Latvia . He defeated Vitali Tajbert , Viktors Vaskis and Tamaz Kebadze before losing to Russian Pawel Schirin (4: 6) in the semifinals. In 2000 he started in featherweight at the Junior World Championships in Hungary , where he advanced to the final by winning against Carmine Cirillo from Italy, Viktor Weissenburger from Germany, Rikardas Bajka from Lithuania and Selçuk Aydın from Turkey; there he finally lost very narrowly with 16:17 against the Hungarian Gyula Káté .
Also at the European Championships in Finland in 2000 , he was able to win a silver medal in featherweight. He beat Georgi Makalatija from Ukraine, Adrian Nascu from Romania and Falk Huste from Germany before he had to admit defeat to Ramaz Paliani from Turkey in the final. Also at the 2002 European Championships in Russia , he won a silver medal in the lightweight. With victories against Araik Sachbasjan from the Czech Republic, Farhad Adjalow from Azerbaijan, Vidas Bičiulaitis from Lithuania and Selçuk Aydın from Turkey, he had advanced to the final, where he was defeated by the Russian Alexander Maletin .
At the chemistry cup in Germany in 2002 he only lost in the final of the light welterweight division against the German Norman Schuster 12:14 and won a silver medal again. He had previously won against Patrik Bogere from Sweden and Aydın Gasanow from Russia. In 2004 he won the EU championships in Spain with a final victory in the light welterweight division against José Guttierez.
In August 2004 he started in the light welterweight division at the Summer Olympics in Athens . There he defeated Nasreddine Filali from Algeria (knockout) in the preliminary round, American Rock Allen in the second round (30:10) and in the quarterfinals Nurschan Karimschanow from Kazakhstan (20:18). Only in the semi-finals did he lose on points against Cuban Yudel Johnson (9:13) and thus got out of the games with a bronze medal.
In 2006 he won the gold medal in the light welterweight division at the European Championships in Bulgaria . He beat Carmine Cirillo from Italy, Emil Maharramow from Azerbaijan, Boris Katalinić from Croatia, Ionuț Gheorghe from Romania and Oleg Komissarow from Russia. In the same year he also won the silver medal in the light welterweight division at the EU championships in Hungary (victories against Bradley Saunders from England and Önder Şipal from Turkey, final defeat against Hungary's Gyula Káté ), as well as a bronze medal at the Chemistry Cup in Germany (victory against Martin Swoboda from the Czech Republic, semi-final defeat against Harun Sipahi from Germany).
At the 2007 World Championships , Georgiev was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Gennady Kovalyov , but qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games .
After Georgiev was eliminated in the first fight against Frankie Gavin , England (13: 5) at the EU Championships in 2008 , he represented Bulgaria in the light welterweight division at the Summer Olympics in Beijing . After beating the American Javier Molina (14: 1), he lost to Urantschimegiin Mönch-Erdene from Mongolia (3:10) in the round of 16 .
