Ionuț Gheorghe

Ionuț Gheorghe (born February 29, 1984 in Constanța ) is a Romanian boxer .

Career

Among the Cadets (U17) Gheorghe won the bronze medal in featherweight (-57 kg) in 1999 and the gold medal in lightweight (-60 kg) at the European Championships in 2000 .

In 2003 Gheorghe won the national lightweight championships for the first time and was thus able to participate in the 2004 Olympic qualification tournament in Gothenburg in the light welterweight (-64 kg), which he won before Boris Georgiev . At the 2004 Olympic Games , Gheorghe surprisingly reached the semi-finals after victories over Faisal Kareem, Pakistan (26:11), Mustafa Karagöllü , Turkey (28:19), and Michele Di Rocco, Italy (29:18) Defending champion Manus Boonjumnong , Thailand (30: 9), lost and won the bronze medal.

In 2008 Gheorghe took part in the Olympic Games thanks to a second place at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Pescara , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Morteza Sepahvand after defeating Jonathan Gonzalez, Puerto Rico (21: 4).

At the European Championships in 2010 Gheorghe started in the welterweight division (-69 kg) and was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the later gold medalist Balázs Bácskai , Hungary (RSC 2nd). It was similar for him at the 2011 World Championships , when he was eliminated in the preliminary round, and at the 2011 European Championships , which ended for him in the quarter-finals. With his elimination from the Olympic qualification tournament in Trabzon , he also missed his third Olympic participation in 2012.
