Alexis Alain Vastine (born November 17, 1986 in Pont-Audemer , Département Eure , France ; † March 9, 2015 at Villa Castelli , Province of La Rioja , Argentina ) was a French boxer . His greatest achievement was winning a bronze light welterweight medal at the 2008 Olympics .

His older brother Adriani Vastine was also a boxer.

Amateur career

Alexis was trained by his father Alain Vastine at the Fournetot boxing club . In 2003 and 2004 he was French junior champion and started at the 2004 Junior World Championships in South Korea , where he was eliminated in the semifinals against Amir Khan and won a bronze medal. He also won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Estonia in 2005 when he was defeated in the semifinals against Andrei Samkowoi . He also won the 2005 Francophone Games in Niger .

In 2007 he was eliminated in June at the EU Championships in Dublin in the preliminary round against Ionuț Gheorghe , but reached the quarter-finals at the World Championships in Chicago in November after defeating Dilschod Machmudow, Edward Akora and Vasile Belous . In the fight for a place in the medal ranks, he was eliminated from Bradley Saunders .

With this success he qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , where he defeated Egidijus Kavaliauskas , this time also Bradley Saunders and Urantschimegiin Mönch-Erdene , and was only eliminated in the semifinals at 10:12 against Félix Díaz and won a bronze medal. Because of his achievements in Beijing, Alexis Vastine was awarded the Ordre national du Mérite in 2008 . He won another bronze medal at the 2008 World Cup in Moscow . This time he was defeated in the semifinals against Mönch-Erdene.

In 2009 he won the Mediterranean Games in Italy and took part in the World Championships in Milan , where he lost to Scott Cardle in the round of 16. At the European Championships 2010 in Moscow he reached the final with wins against Samuel Matevosyan, Leon Chartoy and Mahamed Nurudsinau , where he was defeated by Balázs Bácskai and won silver.

In 2011 he won the World Championships in Baku against Scott Cardle and Mehdi Khalsi , but then lost to Taras Schelestjuk in the round of 16 . He lost to this in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games 2012 in London with a score of 18: 18+ in the fight for a place in the medal ranks, after he had previously defeated Patrick Wojcicki and Bjambyn Tüwschinbat .

As a sports soldier, he also won the CISM Military World Championships in 2008 in Azerbaijan, 2010 in the USA and 2014 in Kazakhstan, as well as the 2011 Military World Games in Brazil. His defeated opponents included Ramal Amanov, Serdar Avcı, Alexander Besputin , Myke Carvalho , Mujandjae Kasuto and Mehdi Khalsi.

He was also French welterweight champion in 2006 and light welterweight in 2007 and 2009. For the Paris United team he fought in the World Series of Boxing .

Vastine died on March 9, 2015 while filming the French program Dropped in a collision between two helicopters in La Rioja Province , Argentina .
