Alexander Alexandrovich Besputin ( Russian Александр Александрович Беспутин * 26. April 1991 in Kamensk-Uralsky , Sverdlovsk Oblast ) is a Russian professional boxer and current WBA world champion in the welterweight division . As an amateur, he became, among other things, European welterweight champion in 2013 .

Personal

Alexander Besputin grew up with his mother together with his older brother. His father had passed away when Alexander was two years old. He is married and has lived in Oxnard , California , United States , since October 2015 .

Amateur career

Alexander Besputin said he started boxing at the age of eight or nine. He is right-handed and therefore boxed in the left display at the beginning of his career , but later switched to the right display.

In 2005 he won the gold medal at the European School Championships in Russia, in 2006 the silver medal at the European Cadet Championships in Albania and in 2007 a bronze medal at the World Cadet Championships in Azerbaijan .

In 2009 he became the Russian youth light welterweight champion and also won the gold medal in this weight class at the 2009 European Youth Championships in Poland .

He won bronze at the Russian adult championships in 2009, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals in 2010 and 2011. During this period he took part in international tournaments in Russia, Kazakhstan , Serbia and the Czech Republic , where he won three gold and two silver. He defeated among others Merei Aqschalow , Evaldas Petrauskas , Hratschik Jawachjan , Zdeněk Chládek and Amin Ghasemipour .

In 2012 he became Russian welterweight champion and won an international tournament in Finland . He then started at the 2013 European Championships in Minsk and also won the gold medal in the welterweight division. He had defeated Antti Hietala from Finland, Souleymane Cissokho from France, Tamerlan Abdullajew from Azerbaijan, Bogdan Shelestyuk from Ukraine and Araik Marutjan from Germany.

With this success he was qualified for the 2013 World Championships in Almaty . With wins against Bjambyn Tüwschinbat and Serdar Hudaýberdiýew he reached the quarterfinals, where he was eliminated in the fight for a place in the medal ranks against Gabriel Maestre . He also boxed for the Russian Boxing Team in the World Series of Boxing in 2013/14 and remained undefeated in three fights.

In 2014 he won the welterweight silver medal at the World Military Championships in Kazakhstan and in 2015 the welterweight silver medal at the European Games in Baku . After victories against Youba Sissokho , Souleymane Cissokho and Jaroslaw Samofalow , he lost in the final against Pərviz Bağırov .

Professional career

After around 300 amateur fights, he signed a professional contract with the US doctoral company Top Rank in October 2015 . Its manager is Egis Klimas. Besputin won his professional debut on December 12, 2015 against Fernando Paliza. After five more wins, he also defeated Breidis Prescott in April 2017 , and Juan Ruiz, who had been undefeated until then, in November 2017.

On September 14, 2018, he defeated Alan Sanchez in the fight for the US championship of the USBA welterweight. In December of the same year he defended the title against Juan Abreu. He won another title defense in April 2019 against Alfredo Blanco.

On November 30, 2019, he won the WBA world title in Monte-Carlo with a unanimous victory on points against Rajab Butayev, who had also been unbeaten up until then .
