Araik Witali Marutjan or Arayk Witaliyi Marutyan (born August 15, 1992 in Armavir ) is a German boxer of Armenian origin. At the end of 2013, he was third in the AIBA world welterweight rankings, making him the best-placed amateur boxer in Germany at the time. In the 2013/14 season he boxed in the WSB and since June 2015 in the professional department (APB) of the AIBA. In July 2016, he qualified to take part in the 2016 Olympic Games .

He made his professional debut in March 2017.

Amateur career

Araik Marutjan was born in Armenia, is around 1.79 m tall and trains with the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr and the BC tractor Schwerin . In order to increase his awareness, especially in the national area and for reasons of recognition, he appears under the artist name "Rayko Löwe". He has been a German citizen since 2008.

Marutjan was 2009 German youth light welterweight champion, where he prevailed against Erich Lang, Thomas Vahrenholdt and Jewgenij Jabs. In 2010 he was with victories against Ilya Fiberg, Yöreci Aytekin and Artjom Daschjan, German light welterweight champion. In 2012 he won the German welterweight championship after defeating Sebastian Knigge, Steven Schwan, Slawa Kerber and Vincenzo Gualtieri. In 2013 he was able to fight for the German welterweight championship title after beating Abdelilah El Karouia, Serkan Oral, Abass Baraou and Slawa Kerber.

His first internationally significant success was the gold medal in bantamweight at the 5th Baltic Youth Championships 2007 in Germany. In 2009 he won a bronze light welterweight medal at the 21st European Youth Championships in Poland. After victories against Victor Carapcevschi from Moldova (7: 0), Muhammet Aydın from Turkey (5: 1) and Vladimir Margarian from Armenia (1: 0), he was only defeated in the semi-finals against Alexander Besputin from Russia (3: 7).

In September 2012 he reached second place in welterweight at the 1st European Military Championships in Estonia. Three months later he took part in the welterweight division at the 1st U22 European Championships in Russia; after victories against Waleriu Sirbu from Moldova (13: 4) and Ričardas Kuncaitis from Lithuania (12: 5), he was eliminated in the semifinals against Artem Selenkowski from Russia (14:17) and thus received another bronze medal.

In June 2013 he became vice European welterweight champion in Minsk . He defeated Aleš Kujavec from Slovenia (tKo), Onur Şipal from Turkey (3: 0), Saal Kwachatadze from Georgia (3: 0) and Pavel Kostromin from Belarus (2: 1), before he only defeated Alexander Besputin in the final (0: 3) eliminated. He achieved another success at the 17th World Championships in October 2013 in Almaty . After a bye for the first round, he then defeated Önder Şipal from Turkey, Simeon Chamow from Bulgaria and Fred Evans from Wales, before he only lost in the semifinals against Danijar Jeleussinow from Kazakhstan and thus won a bronze medal in the welterweight division. In December 2013, his record was 105 wins in 127 fights.

In 2016 he took part in the European Olympic qualification in Samsun , but already lost his first fight against Cyrus Pattinson. At the APB / WSB Olympic qualification in Venezuela in July 2016 , he defeated Paul Kroll from the USA and Neeraj Goyat from India and thus won a starting place at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There he was eliminated in the first fight against Gabriel Maestre .

WSB

In the 2013/2014 season Marutjan started for Team Germany at the World Series of Boxing . He won his first fight on November 16, 2013 against Fehim Chabane of the Algeria Desert Hawks . In his second fight on December 11, 2013, he finally suffered a defeat against Vincenzo Mangiacapre from the Dolce Gabbana Italia Thunder team . On February 22nd, 2014 he was also defeated on points against the world number two Gabriel Maestre from Venezuela, who started for Team USA Knockouts .

APB

In the new AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) series, professional boxers can compete for the first time to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games. After Marutjan had to miss the first cycle in the newly created professional series because of an almond operation, he started the second round in 2015 and won his first fight on June 19 in Kemerovo, Siberia, against the Iranian Amin Ghasemipour unanimously on points. However, he lost his second fight in the series on July 24 in Kemerewo against the Cuban Arisnoide Despaigne .

  • February 2016: 1st place in the welterweight division at the 60th Bocskai tournament in Hungary
  • March 2016: 2nd place in welterweight at the 43rd Chemistry Cup in Germany, u. a. Victory against the reigning world champion Mohammed Rabii (2: 1)

Professional career

On March 4, 2017, Marutjan competed in his first professional fight under the promoter Sauerland Event and won by winning points after breaking off due to injury. After the fight, Marutjan was diagnosed with an injury to his Achilles tendon. He was therefore only able to contest his next fight in January 2018.

In August 2019 he lost on points against the British Alfredo Meli.
