Kemerovo ( Russian Кемерово ) [ kʲemʲɪrəvə ] is a city in western Siberia in Russia at Tom . It has 532,981 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
Kemerovo is the capital of the Kemerovo Oblast , which was founded in 1943 and includes the geographical region of the Kuznetsk coal basin (Kuzbass for short). The coal deposits of the Kuznetsk Basin were discovered in 1721 by Mikhailo Volkov. A square with a monument in the center of Kemerovo is dedicated to him.
history
The city of Kemerovo grew out of several villages. Schtscheglowo (in 1859 seven villages were located on the territory of the present city Щеглово ), Kemerovo Jewsejewo ((known since 1734), Евсеево ), Krasny Yar ( Красный Яр ), spa Iskitim ( Кур-Искитим ) davydovo ( Давыдово ) and Borovaya ( Боровая ).
Schtscheglowo was in 1918 Schtscheglowsk ( Щегловск renamed) and received city rights. The city has been called Kemerovo since 1932. In 1921, the Kuzbass Autonomous Industrial Colony was founded to promote industrialization .
In Kemerovo there was a prisoner of war camp 503 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War .
On March 25, 2018, there was a major fire in the Simnjaya Vishnya shopping and entertainment center, which was built in 2013 , in which the ceiling over two cinema halls collapsed. More than 200 people were evacuated and at least 64 people were killed.

Kemerovo has an airport with international connections ( IATA : KEJ) and a tram that was in operation on April 11, 1940. The city is connected to Moscow by a branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway . Kemerovo is also on the Russian R255 highway , which is part of the transcontinental road connection from Moscow to Vladivostok .
Sports
In Siberia, the city is also known for the football club Kuzbass Kemerovo , which plays in the second Russian division ( East Zone ). The city's ice hockey club is called Kuzbass Kemerovo , and the volleyball club is VK Kuzbass Kemerovo . In the bandy the city is represented by HK Kuzbass Kemerovo .
The 2007 World Bandy Championship was held in the Chimik Stadium in Kemerovo .
economy
The structure of the Kemerov economy is shaped by services, especially the public sector (education, health, public administration). The manufacturing industries, including the food industry, the chemical industry and the manufacture of coke, are also well developed.

- SIBPLAZ (main office) - Russian cross-industry holding company active in the field of mining and processing of minerals with integrated operations of mining, processing, chemistry, energy, mechanical engineering, logistics and marketing activities.
- Orton - the largest manufacturer of geosynthetic materials (geosynthetics) in the Asian part of Russia
- Azot - the largest producer of nitrogen fertilizers in Russia
- Kemerowochleb - bread factory
- Kemerovo Mjasokombinat - meat processing plant
- Volkov farm - meat processing plant
- Kemerovo Dairy Plant
- Tokem - the only major manufacturer of ion exchange resin in Russia
