List of cities in Russia |
Jurga ( Russian Юрга ) is a city with 81,533 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in western Siberia in Russia on the Tom River . It is relatively centrally located between the cities of Novosibirsk , Tomsk and Kemerovo on the Trans-Siberian railway line .
history
The city was founded in 1886 as a station settlement and only gained industrial importance during the Second World War , when mechanical engineering companies were relocated there from the European part of the country in order to locate them outside the range of German aircraft. Various industrial plants, for example from Leningrad, were transported to Jurga within a very short time and then rebuilt there.
During the Second World War and afterwards, the POW camp 526 for German prisoners of war existed here . Today there is still a small cemetery with gravestones with German inscriptions that commemorate the deceased German prisoners of war. The prisoners of war built numerous houses in Jurga in the southern German style. The houses are being renovated today and give the city an interesting touch next to the numerous prefabricated buildings from the Soviet era .
