Taiga ( Russian Тайга ) is a city in Kemerovo Oblast ( Russia ) with 25,331 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The city is located in the north of the oblast, about 100 km north of its capital Kemerovo . The climate is continental.

The city of Taiga is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast. Five villages with a total of 2,611 inhabitants are subordinate to the city, so that the total number of inhabitants in the administrative unit “City of Taiga” is 27,491 (2009 calculation).

Taiga is a station on the Trans-Siberian Railway, which opened on this section in January 1898 (route km 3565 from Moscow ). The branch line to Tomsk , which was opened at the same time, branches off here (later extended: 1937 to Assino , 1973 to Bely Jar ).

history

Taiga emerged from the end of the 19th century in connection with the construction and operation of the Trans-Siberian Railway (1898 is considered the year of foundation). In 1925 the place received city rights.

Culture, education and sights

There is a Municipal History Museum in Taiga.

There is a branch of the Omsk State Transport University (Омская государственная академия путей сообщения).
