Tashtagol ( Russian Таштагол ) is a city in Kemerovo Oblast ( Russia ) with 23,134 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the mountainous region south of the Kuzbass , about 150 km south of Novokuznetsk , on the Kondoma River, named after the people of the Schoren Bergschorien ( Gornaja Schoria ) . The climate is continental.

The city of Tashtagol is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

Tashtagol has been connected to Novokuznetsk since 1940 by a railway line and a parallel road via Kaltan and Ossinniki .

history

Taschtagol was established in 1939 as a settlement near the iron ore mine there . The place name is derived from the Turkish - Mongolian words for stony valley or gorge . In 1963 the place received city rights.

Culture and sights

In Tashagol there is a municipal museum of local history with an attached museum for ethnography and nature mountain chorias (Музей этнографии и природы Горной Шории).

The iron ore mining for the steel works of the Kuzbass determines the economy of Tashtagol and the surrounding area. There are also companies in the building materials industry.
