Kaltan ( Russian Калтан ) is a city in Kemerovo Oblast ( Russia ) with 21,892 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the southern part of the Kuzbass , 40 km southeast of Novokuznetsk on the Kondoma River , a left tributary of the Tom . The climate is continental.
The city of Kaltan is administratively directly subordinate to the oblast.
Kaltan is located on the railway line opened on this section in 1936 and the Novokuznetsk - Tashtagol road .
history
Kaltan emerged in 1946 from a Shoric settlement in connection with the construction of the South Kuzbass thermal power station . In 1950 the place received the status of urban-type settlement . In 1959 city rights were granted. Before the city was placed under direct administration of the Oblast in 1993, however, it was subordinate to the administration of the city of Ossinniki .

In addition to hard coal mining for the South Kuzbass thermal power plant located here (Южно-Кузбасская ГРЭС / Yuzhno-Kuzbasskaja GRES) there are mechanical engineering and wood and building materials industries.
