Award Hero of the Russian Federation

Hero of the Russian Federation ( Russian Герой Российской Федерации , transcription Geroi Rossijskoi Federazii ) is the highest honor and honorary title awarded in Russia . The Russian President awards this medal to people who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary bravery in the tasks assigned to them or other heroic deeds in the service of the state.

So far, the award has been given around 750 times, mainly to cosmonauts and soldiers who fought in the two Chechen wars. But also artists, politicians, athletes and personalities from the economy were honored with this medal.

history

The award was introduced by decree on March 20, 1992 by Russian President Boris Yeltsin to replace the previous titles Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of Socialist Labor . Decree No. 2553-I contains the criteria for the award of the title and also for the design of the medal.

The appearance of the order is similar to that of the Hero of the Soviet Union. A five-pointed, undecorated star hangs on a white-blue-red ribbon (19.5 × 15 mm). The gold star has a diameter of 15 mm and weighs 21.5 grams. On the back are the words Герой России (Russian for Hero of Russia ) and a serial number. In public, the order is worn on the left side of the jacket, above other medals and awards.

Recipient (selection)

Most of the recipients of this title are either cosmonauts or people involved in the Chechnya conflict. While cosmonauts automatically get this award with their space flight, those in Chechnya get the title for bravery in battle or for leading the pro-Russian government. The award is also given posthumously to people who are killed in the exercise of their duties or have died in an attack. To date, the award has been given to around 750 people, 340 of them posthumously .
