Sergei Anatolyevich Preminin

Sergei Preminin ( Russian Сергей Анатольевич Преминин , scientific. Transliteration Sergei Anatol'evič Preminin * 18th October 1965 in Skornjakowo , Vologda Oblast , † 3. October 1986 on K-219 ) was a crew member of the Soviet submarine K-219 and prevented a meltdown at the risk of his life. He was posthumously named Hero of the Russian Federation .

Life

Preminin's father was an electrician and his mother worked in a flax factory. The couple had three sons. Sergei attended school in the city of Krasavino and decided to follow in his older brother's footsteps. As Nikolai he graduated from the engineering school in Veliky Ustyug in the Vologda Oblast . On October 23, 1984, Sergei was drafted into the Soviet Navy . He served on the K-219 , a Soviet strategic nuclear-powered submarine .

Preminin died on October 3, 1986 in the hot reactor chamber of the submarine when he prevented an impending core meltdown by means of a reactor emergency shutdown . For this he was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Star .

Honors

  • By ukase No. 844 of the Russian President dated August 7, 1997 he was posthumously named Hero of the Russian Federation.
  • A monument in his honor was erected in the town of Krasavino.
  • A memorial was erected in the closed city of Gajievo ; a street and two schools were named after him there.

reception

The sinking of the submarine and Preminin's role in it were the template for the US thriller Hostile Waters , which was produced by Warner Bros. in 1997 under the direction of David Drury . Rob Campbell played the role of Preminin.
