reception

The music album Rudebox is the seventh studio album by Robbie Williams and received very different reviews from critics when it was released; however, the assessment outweighed that the album had failed.

The FAZ answered the question asked at the beginning “Is the Rudebox good or not?” With “Yes, it is good”. The FAZ did not consider a translation of the word “rudebox” necessary for reasons of decency and merely referred to Williams' weakness for “the lewd vocabulary of the street”.

Der Spiegel, on the other hand, described Rudebox in its online edition as "obviously hastily put together, [it] is not just bad, the album is an impertinence". Due to the many different producers and the therefore strongly changing musical styles, the album lacks a clear line. In addition, the compositions are musically weak; the album is generally a collection of titles that "other artists would not even publish as B-sides".

Tensions that had developed between the singer and parts of the press on the occasion of Williams' 2006 world tour may have contributed to the largely negative reception by the critics. But even the fans, who had received the predecessor Intensive Care positively overall, reacted cautiously: In commercial terms, the album - measured against Williams' previous successes - was a disappointment.

When it was released, the song Rudebox , which stylistically represented a clear departure from Williams' previous music, was mostly panned by the British press . It is true that Priya Elan took the view in the New Musical Express that it was "an amazing pop album". But Victoria Newton described Rudebox in the mass newspaper The Sun as "worst record I've EVER heard". A passage in the title track caused complications in which Williams raps the line "... dance like you just won at the Special Olympics ..." ("... dance as if you had won the Special Olympics ...").

After protests from various disability organizations , the word "special" was cut out when the piece was released as a single. It is open whether it was a deliberately staged scandal.

Rudebox

The title song Rudebox was released as the first single . The title reached number 1 in the charts in the first week of sales in Germany, Italy and Switzerland and also made it into the top 5 in most other European countries.

The track was first played on UK radio station Radio 1 by DJ Scott Mills on Friday 7th July. This broke the label's embargo, which led to a minor scandal. This was the second time Scott Mills broke a label's embargo, the first time it happened at Justin Timberlake's SexyBack . The song was officially released in September.

It is striking that Robbie Williams musically tends towards rap , albeit based on the form that was widespread in Western Europe in the 1980s. Among other things, Rudebox uses a cheap keyboard from Casio ( Casio VL-1 ) as an instrument , which the band Trio had already used in 1982 in their world hit Da da da .

The 90s

An ex- manager of Robbie Williams, Nigel Martin-Smith, complained about the text in The 90s , but Williams ignored the request to change it. The London State Court therefore imposed a fine of US $ 250,000 on Williams' record company EMI on October 17, 2006.
