background

Escapology is the last of five albums that Robbie Williams recorded with co-writer and producer Guy Chambers, from whom he split after the recordings in an argument because Chambers refused to work exclusively for Williams. At the same time, it was the first of five albums that Williams had to deliver to the record company EMI as part of his record deal signed in 2002 for more than 80 million pounds. The album was explicitly designed to make Williams, who was a superstar all over Europe at the time, also popular in the USA. However, this project failed: Escapology only reached number 43 in the charts in the USA .

Successes and criticism

Escapology reached number 1 in the charts in many European countries - including Germany , Great Britain , Austria and Switzerland . The album has sold around 7.5 million copies so far and was the UK 's most successful solo album of 2002. It went platinum seven times in the UK and four times in Germany.

Regardless of the commercial success, many music critics expressed themselves rather disappointed and accused Williams' artistic standstill. The New Musical Express only gave the album four stars out of ten, and The Guardian was annoyed that the US market was all too obviously targeted. The BBC , however, called Escapology Williams' best album to date.
