The Ministry of Interior of the Russian Federation ( Russian Министерство внутренних дел Российской Федерации , often short MWD ( Russian МВД )) is the Russian Ministry of Interior and one of the 16 ministries of the Russian government .
history
The Interior Ministry of the Russian Federation, which emerged after the dissolution of the Soviet Union , emerged from the Interior Ministry of the USSR , which since 1946 was called the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Russian: Министерство внутренних дел), abbreviated to MWD, but above all in the period 1934-1946 with the abbreviation NKVD (for People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs - Народный комиссариат внутренних дел) became notorious.
tasks
The tasks and powers of the MWD are set out in the statute of the Ministry of Interior of the Russian Federation, which was confirmed in its current version by a decree of the President of July 19, 2004. The main tasks of the MWD consist of safeguarding the legal order, monitoring compliance with the law and the rights and freedoms of citizens, state control over the circulation of weapons, organization and authority over internal troops (including, for example, special units for combating terrorism and the police , from 2016 also the National Guard ), as well as the monitoring of road traffic.
structure
The head of the MWD is the respective interior minister of the Russian Federation. He is a member of the government, but the ministry itself is directly subordinate to the president. Vladimir Kolokolzew has been Minister of the Interior since May 21, 2012 . Well-known predecessors were Raschid Nurgalijew (2004–2012), Boris Gryslow (2001–2003), Vladimir Ruschailo (1999–2001) and Sergei Stepashin (1998–1999).
