Roman Filipov

Roman Nikolajewitsch Filipow ( Russian Роман Николаевич Филипов ; born August 13, 1984 in Voronezh ; † February 3, 2018 in Sarakeb , Syria ) was a Russian military pilot.

He was shot down over Syria with his Sukhoi Su-25 ground attack aircraft. After landing with the ejector seat , he continued to have radio contact with the Russian air base. When fighters from the Haiʾat Tahrir al-Sham militia, an al-Qaida offshoot, approached after his landing, he defended himself with his hand weapon Stechkin APS and reported the killing of two opponents. He was badly wounded in the ongoing battle. To avoid capture, he waited until the attackers approached him and blew himself up with a hand grenade .

Guard Major Filipov was posthumously honored as a Hero of the Russian Federation .

About 30,000 guests came to his memorial service in Voronezh in southwest Russia.
