The Stechkin APS ( Russian Автоматический Пистолет Стечкина - Awtomatitscheskij Pistolet Stechkina ) is a row fire pistol that was manufactured in the Soviet Union .
Development and construction
The original design by Igor Stechkin was created shortly after the Second World War and used the Tokarev cartridge 7.62 × 25 mm Tokarew M1930 . When the 9 × 18 caliber with the Makarov pistol became the new standard pistol ammunition of the Red Army, he converted his pistol to it. This was not the only thing in common: like the Makarow, the weapon is an unlocked recoil loader with a double action trigger . The energy of the cartridge is still within the limits of what such a simple locking mechanism can handle. The Stetschkin was not designed as a normal handgun, but should also be able to shoot continuous fire and thus be able to perform the tasks of a submachine gun . There was the option of mounting a stop shaft on the handle. With the stock and full magazine, the weapon weighs 1.78 kg. The type of fire can be selected on the safety lever.
commitment
The suitability tests were very successful, highlighting the gun's precision and low recoil. Due to the long barrel, the line of sight and the bulkiness of the muzzle increased, the muzzle velocity is 340 m / s. The APS should be used primarily for crews of armored vehicles and as a personal weapon for senior officers. As a pistol, however, it was quite heavy, and the additional wooden butt was bulky. Kalashnikov assault rifles with folding stock usually did better justice to this role. Therefore, the pistol did not find widespread use, and production ceased in 1975.
In the case of continuous fire, the effective shooting range is 200 m.
modernization
With the use of Soviet special forces such as the Spetsnaz during the Afghanistan war , the need for compact firearms increased. To do this, the stock was replaced by a shoulder rest made of profile steel and the weapon was fitted with a silencer . The model was called the Stechkin APB ( B for: Bes'schumnyj , i.e. silent ). This gave the weapon a new meaning. In the recent past, in addition to troops from the Russian Interior Ministry MWD , police units have also been equipped with it.
