Tulski Oruscheiny Sawod ( Tulaer Waffenwerk , Russian Ту́льский оруже́йный заво́д , abbreviated ТОЗ ) is an armaments company in the Russian city of Tula . The factory, founded in 1712, is one of the oldest and most renowned arms manufacturers in Russia.

history

In the 17th century, metalworking developed in the former fortress town of Tula thanks to rich iron ore deposits in the area. In addition to agricultural and household needs, more and more iron smiths also produced rifles and various edged weapons . Nikita Demidow , among others, had made a good name for himself , who produced army rifles in large quantities towards the end of the 17th century and delivered them to the Russian army at very reasonable prices . This came in handy for Peter the Great during the years of the Great Northern War . As he knew about the good quality of Tula rifles, he ordered by ukase on February 15, 1712 to unite the resources of the Tula arms makers and to build a large arms factory in Tula that could quickly and reliably supply the Russian army with weapons in the event of a defense . The Russian state generously supported the construction of the plant and had it equipped with the most modern systems for the time. Production in the new factory started on January 10, 1714, and just a few years later over 20,000 rifles were being produced here every year.

In the following decades, the plant always achieved its greatest output in the war years. During the Russo-Ottoman Wars , in the Patriotic War , later also in the Russo-Japanese and in the First World War , the Tula plant was the main supplier to the Russian army. At the end of the 19th century, the factory's production capacity was significantly increased again as part of a major renovation. Even during the Soviet era , the plant retained its great importance and supplied, among other things, the defenders of Tula during the battles for the city in World War II .

In 1927, the construction office for device construction (KBP) was founded within the weapons factory, which was originally responsible for the development of small arms. Spun off from the weapons factory as an independent company in 1935, today the KBP is one of the most important developers of anti-tank systems, guided missiles and missile systems, but also sports weapons.

In peacetime, the focus of the plant is on the production of weapons for civilian use, including hunting and sporting weapons.

The industrial plants of the Tula arms plant are still located in the center of Tula, on the left bank of the Upa and only a few minutes' walk from the Tula Kremlin . The Tula Arms Museum, which was founded in 1920 and presents the history of the Russian armaments industry and exhibits from different countries and eras, is located on the Kremlin grounds.

production

The most famous weapons produced by the Tula weapons factory in its history include the Mosin-Nagant repeating rifle , the Makarov pistol , the PM 1910 (based on the Maxim machine gun ), the Stechkin APS , the Beresin UB , the AKS Kalashnikov assault rifle -74U , the GP-25 grenade launcher or the Konkurs-M anti-tank system .
