Salgó Castle

Salgótarján [ ˈʃɒlgoːtɒrjaːn ] (German rarely Schalgotarjan / Schalgau , Slovak Šalgov-Tarjany / Šalgotarján ) is the county seat of Nógrád and is located in northern Hungary near the Slovakian border.

Origin of the name

The name Salgótarján was created by merging Salgó and Tarján. Salgó is the name of the nearby castle; salgó means “shiny” in old Hungarian.

Tarján was the prince of the settling Magyars , and the name itself means (old.) "Prince".

history

The village already existed in the Middle Ages, but there is hardly any information. The settlement was probably a small village at that time, or two small villages, Salgó and Tarján.

Salgó Castle (about which Sándor Petőfi wrote a poem) was built in the 13th century. The first church also dates from the 13th century.

The first mention was kenyeretlen Tarján ( Eng . "Breadless Tarján"). That is probably an indication of the poor conditions at the time.

In the 17th century the village already had 247 inhabitants, but after the siege of Fülek Castle in 1682, the settlements were completely depopulated. Tarján was uninhabited for ten years. The residents then returned slowly. The village remained insignificant for a long time.

In 1850, lignite was found near the village. The beginning of mining made the town more important and developed rapidly. A number of new factories and companies were founded, for example Salgótarjáni Kőszénbánya Rt. ( Salgótarján Braunkohle AG ) in 1860 , which was one of the most important companies in Hungary at the time. Rimamurány-Salgótarjáni Vasmű Rt. ( Eisenwerk Rimamurány-Salgótarján AG ), which was the second largest company in the country's steel industry at the time , was created through the merger of two companies .

The new factories brought many workers to the city. As a result, the city's ethnic conditions have changed.

In 1922 Salgótarján was promoted to city. The first mayor was named Dr. Kálmán Forester.

In 1950 the seat of Nógrád County moved from Balassagyarmat to Salgótarján. Baglyasalja was incorporated in the same year, later also Zagyvapálfalva (1961), Zagyvaróna (1973), Somoskő and Somoskőújfalu (1977).

After a referendum on September 4, 2004 in Somoskőújfalú, this place became independent again in 2006.

In 1994 Salgótarján got the county right .

economy

For a long time, mining has played an extremely important role in the city's economy. This situation changed in the early 1970s. Since then, mechanical engineering and light industry have predominated. Steelmaking, which has a 100-year tradition in the city, has practically completely disappeared.

Glass production was also an important industry in the city, but by the early 1990s most of the factories closed.

There is currently an industrial park in the city.
