Ferenc Szojka (born April 7, 1931 in Salgótarján , † September 17, 2011 there ) was a Hungarian football player . With the national team of his home country he took part in the soccer world championships in 1954 and 1958 .

Career

Ferenc Szojka began his football career in 1950 at his hometown club Salgótarjáni BTC , where he had already worked in the youth department. Throughout his career he remained loyal to the club, which then played most of the time in the first Hungarian football league, the Nemzeti Bajnokság . However, he could not win a title, neither at national level nor notable successes in the international field, with Salgótarjáni BTC, now playing in the third division. He completed a total of 324 games for his club during his career between 1950 and 1966, in which Szojka, who was acting on the position of midfielder, scored sixteen goals.

In the Hungarian national soccer team Ferenc Szojka was used 28 times between 1954 and 1960. In these games he scored one goal. With the Hungarian national team he took part in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland , where he was only used once. The 9: 0 in the preliminary round against South Korea was also Szojka's first international match. His team, which went into the tournament as a big favorite after not losing for four years, surprisingly failed in the final against Germany and missed the world championship title that was believed to be safe. Szojka's time in the national team only began with the World Cup. Four years after the final in Bern, he was one of the few who were in Hungary's squad in 1954 to experience a second soccer World Cup . In Sweden , however, Hungary failed after the preliminary round. Szojka was used in two of the three group games. He made his last international match in 1960 at 1: 2 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels against Belgium .
