Northern Hungary ( Hungarian Észak-Magyarország ) is one of the seven regions of the Republic of Hungary. It is based on NUTS 2 (code: HU31) . In northern Hungary there are Nógrád County , Heves County and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County .

geography

Northern Hungary is criss-crossed by several mountain ranges with heights of up to 900 m. They mainly extend over the area between the rivers of the Danube and the Tisza .

With the 1014 m high Kékes you can find the highest mountain in the country in the Mátra Mountains .

National parks

The Aggtelek National Park was established in 1985 to protect the underground and above-ground world of the former Karst of Gömör-Tornai. In 1995 the region, together with the neighboring Slovak Karst, was included in the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage by UNESCO . This cave world is part of the largest stalactite cave system in Europe. Its most important cave is the Baradla Cave , which together with the Domica branch (in Slovakia) is 25 km long. On the Hungarian side there is a tunnel system with a length of 17 km, making this cave the largest in Hungary.

History and monuments

The many monuments show that this area played a major role in the history of the country. King Béla IV suffered a defeat by the Turks at Muhi, István Dobó drove the Turks out of the Eger Castle and István Bocskai was elected prince in Szerencs. Zemplén was owned by Rákóczis: Parliamentary sessions were held in the “SubRosa” room in Sárospatak Castle, the Castle in Ónod and the Rákóczi House in Miskolc.

wine growing

The region is also important for viticulture. The city of Tokaj is probably world famous for its wines. The "wine of kings", as the Tokaj Aszu is also called, comes from this wine-growing region. Another well-known wine, the "Erlauer bull's blood", comes from the beautiful area around Eger (Erlau).

Important cities

The capital of Northern Hungary is Miskolc , the third largest city in the country. In addition to the city center, which is well worth seeing and interesting leisure opportunities, there is a large thermal and cave bath in the city area in the associated Miskolc-Tapolca, which is unique in Europe and attracts many spa guests.
