Nógrád [ ˈnoːɡraːd ] ( German Neuburg , Slovak Novohrad ) is a county (administrative district) in northern Hungary . It shares borders with Slovakia and the Pest , Heves and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén counties . It has an area of 2,544.18 km² and 193,946 inhabitants (2016). The county seat is Salgótarján .
The name Nógrád is of Slavic origin. It can be traced back to the Slavic Novigrad (from Novi grad ), which means “Neuburg” or “Neustadt” in German and Újvár in Hungarian . It is probable that the first meaning was "Neuburg", since the castles were usually built first , then the places around them. First there was a castle of this name, Nógrád Castle , which was built on a 286 meter high castle hill. The place Nógrád around them was named after this, after which the whole county was named.
geography
The area is hilly and is crossed by the Northern Hungarian Central Mountains , a foothill of the Carpathian Mountains . The border with Slovakia is formed over a large stretch of the Eipel ( Hungarian Ipoly ).
structure
With the government ordinance No. 218/2012 of August 13, 2012, the statistical small regions (Hungarian kistérség ) were abolished on January 1, 2013 and replaced by an approximately equal number of districts (Hungarian járás ). The small areas were retained for a while for planning and statistical purposes, but were finally abolished on February 25, 2014. There were six small areas in the county before it was dissolved. Three administrative units remained unchanged in their borders through the reform.

History and culture
The county emerged from the county of the same name (often called Neograd / Neuburg in German ) after the collapse of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1918 and was then united with the Hungarian part of Hont county to form Nógrád-Hont county . After the cession of southern Slovakia as a result of the first Vienna arbitration award in 1939 , the Slovak part of the county that had been in Slovakia since 1918 was re-connected to the Hungarian part until 1945 . The county has existed in its current form since 1950 , after a small part of the former Hont county was added to the Hungarian part of the county.
