Nógrád [ ˈnoːɡraːd ] is a municipality in Hungary . It is located in Nógrád County , which is in northern Hungary.
The name Nógrád is of Slavic origin: It is derived from the Slavic Novigrad (from Novi grad ), which means “Neuburg” or “Neustadt” in German , and Újvár or Újváros in Hungarian . It is probable that the first meaning was "Neuburg", since the castles were usually built first , then the places around them. First there was a castle of this name, Nógrád Castle , which was built on a 286 meter high castle hill. The place around them was named after this, after which the whole county was named.
Nógrád is 29.52 km² and has 1678 inhabitants (as of 2010) .
Nógrád is a popular excursion and holiday destination among Hungarians. The castle is a special attraction. Although it is in a rather poor condition, renovation work is currently being started.
The closest localities are Nőtincs , Diósjenő and Berkenye .
