Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén [ ˈborʃod ˈɒbɒ.uːj ˈzɛmpleːn ] is a county in northern Hungary . It borders Slovakia in the north and the counties of Nógrád , Heves , Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok , Hajdú-Bihar and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg . It has an area of ​​7,247.23 km² and 660,549 inhabitants (2016). The county seat is Miskolc , other important places are Sátoraljaújhely , Ózd , Tiszaújváros and the wine town Tokaj with the Tokaj wine region .

geography

The area is hilly and in the west mainly characterized by the Bükk Mountains. The landscape becomes flatter to the southeast towards the Tisza . Tributaries of the Tisza are Sajó and Bodrog .

To the north-east of the county in Slovakia, the Zemplín region joins, which makes up the Slovak part of the old Zemplén county .

Former classification

With the government ordinance No. 218/2012 of August 13, 2012, the statistical small regions (Hungarian kistérség ) were abolished on January 1, 2013 and replaced by an approximately equal number of districts (Hungarian járás ). The small areas were retained for a while for planning and statistical purposes, but were finally abolished on February 25, 2014. Until the dissolution there were 15 small areas in the county. Two administrative units (Sárospatak and Tokaj) remained unchanged in their borders during the reform.

History and culture

The county of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén was formed by the county reform of 1950 from the counties or counties ( Hungarian vármegye ): Abaúj-Torna , Borsod-Gömör and Zemplén and some border municipalities of the counties of Heves and Szabolcs .
