Lillafüred is a district of the Hungarian city of Miskolc with 217 inhabitants (as of 2011), which is mainly known as a holiday resort in the Bükk Mountains.

location

Lillafüred is located west of Miskolc, about 15 kilometers from the city center, on the eastern edge of the Bükk Mountains. Lillafüred is separated from the city center by the valley of the Szinva brook ( Szinva-patak ), a tributary of the Sajó . The place Lillafüred extends mainly in a north-south direction along the Szinva brook at an altitude of 300 to 350 meters, while surrounding hills reach up to 650 m. Répáshuta is twelve kilometers away and Eger is 43 kilometers away on the road no.2505 .

history

The expansion of the city of Miskolc into the adjacent Bükk Mountains took place in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the city experienced an industrial heyday. To regulate the water supply Miskolc ', 1811 Garadna stream that flows near Lillafüred in the Szinva was immediately northwest of the today's settlement to Taj-tó (now Hámori tó ) dammed . While Eisenhammer had already settled along the Szinva in the 18th century , the wealthy urban population discovered the area around the new reservoir as a recreational and hunting area for themselves. As a result, the first villas and holiday homes were built in what is now Lillafüred. Around 1889, the naturalist Ottó Herman also bought a plot of land in Lillafüred. On this he later built a house, which today houses the Herman Ottó emlékház memorial .

In 1892 the small settlement was officially named Lillafüred by a decision of the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture . The namesake Elizabeta "Lilla" Vay was the wife of the later Ban of Croatia Teodor Pejačević and not, as is often claimed, the wife of the then Agriculture Minister András Bethlen . Lilla's brother Elemér Vay, the chairman of the Borsoder Bükk Association, had applied to the ministry for nomination ten years earlier.

The palace hotel ( Palotaszálló , also Hotel Palota ) was built between 1927 and 1930 , which gave tourism in Lillafüred a significant boost. In the course of this, passenger traffic on the forest railway , which connects Lillafüred with Miskolc and which was initially only built for freight traffic, was expanded. In the 1930s it carried 300,000 passengers a year. At the same time as the palace hotel was built, the Anna cave ( Anna-barlang ) and the Szent-István cave below the palace hotel were opened up as show caves and terraced gardens were created next to the hotel.
