history

The Roman Catholic Church of Szendrő (1635)

Szendrő was first mentioned in 1317. The castle was one of the earliest stone castles in the region. It was an important border fortification during the Turkish occupation of parts of Hungary in the 16th and 17th centuries. During the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi (1702–1711), he destroyed the castle in 1707.

In 1896 Szendrő received a railway connection, in 1996 the place was given city status.
