Gönc (German rarely Guntz ) is a Hungarian city in the district of the same name in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County .
Geographical location
Gönc is located in northern Hungary , about five kilometers south of the border with Slovakia , between Miskolc county seat 70 kilometers southwest and Košice in the north of Slovakia .
history
Gönc has been settled since the Hungarians conquered it at the beginning of the 10th century. In the Middle Ages it was a royal property and an important trading center. The Reformation played a certain role in the history of the city. The Calvinist Gáspár Károli translated the Bible into Hungarian here. The Calvinist seminary of Sárospatak moved here for a short time in 1687.
In the Treaty of Trianon , Hungary ceded its northern territories in 1920, so Gönc was in the border region and had lost its importance for trade. In 2001 the place received city status .
The place is for centuries for its "Göncer barrels" (Hungarian Gönci Hordó known), the Fassbinder for the fermentation of Tokaji produce.
