Tokaj [ ˈtokɒj ] (German: Tokey ) is an old town on the Tisza River in northeast Hungary in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County , 53 kilometers from the Miskolc county seat . The city is the center of the Hungarian part of the Tokaj wine region, where the famous Tokaj is grown.

history

The fortress, known today in Tokaj as the Rákóczi Castle, was first built by the notary of King Béla III. (1172–1196) described as "Hymesudoar" or Hímesudvar (court of Hímes). This notary was also the famous Hungarian writer of his time. His name is not known, which is why he is called Anonymus .

The city was first mentioned in 1353. In the 14th century at the latest, a stone castle was built here that belonged to the Diósgyőr manor .

After 1450 Tokaj was owned by the Hunyadi family, so that with Matthias Corvinus ' accession to the throne, the city became royal property. In 1705 Francis II Rákóczi ordered the castle to be demolished.

In the 20th century, the city lost its importance and the status of a city. Its role in the wine trade was taken over by the town of Sátoraljaújhely . It was not until 1986 that the community was declared a city again.

Characteristic

The city is considered the center of the Hungarian Tokaj wine region and is a tourist attraction. Despite the small number of inhabitants, it is an important traffic junction, two large bridges lead over the Tisza , the railway bridge and the traffic bridge (Queen Elisabeth's Bridge). The settlement consists of two parts: the old town lies on the Bodrog (it is called "the city"), "Klein Tokaj" is slightly larger than the old town and lies on the Tisza. Tokaj can be described as a school town because, in addition to a primary school, there are three secondary schools: the Tokaji Ferenc High School (technical secondary school for education, environmental protection and environmental economics), the secondary school for trade and tourism and the vocational school for agriculture.

Attractions

In the main square there is a Roman Catholic church built in 1912 with a carillon. In the middle of the main square is the statue of István I the Saint , which was erected in memory of the Hungarian Millennium. The Tokaj Museum, which a Greek family of traders had built in the 17th century, is also located directly on the main square. The Tokaj Gallery is located in the old Greek Orthodox Church, and various cultural programs (concerts, exhibitions) are held here. The Greek Catholic Church, the oldest church in Tokaj, is equipped with a remarkable iconostasis . The high school building was built in 1996 and is architecturally modeled on the historical Tokaj Castle. The Rákóczi wine cellar, the largest in Tokaj-Hegyalja , has a total length of 1.5 km and can store 20,000 hectoliters of wine. In front of this wine cellar is the statue of Bacchus , which the city received from its twin town Oestrich-Winkel . In the vicinity of Tokaj there is a transmission tower of the Hungarian radio, which is one of the few transmission towers designed as a hybrid tower .
