Anonymous (chronicler)
Anonymous was a chronicler and notary at the court of King Bélas (Bele Regis Notarius) at the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century. The exact year of birth of Anonymous is not known, nor is the name of the chronicler. Only that his name began with P., because he called himself P. dictus magister (“the master who calls himself P.”) can be considered to be somewhat certain.
Some researchers claim that it is the bishop of Győr , Péter. Others suspect the name Pál Péter, the Bishop of Transylvania , and still others Master Pous, the notary at the court of Bélas IV.
Works
Anonymus was an important author in medieval Hungary who wrote down the history of the settlement of the Magyars in 57 chapters. He also reported the names of the tribal leaders, but most historians do not believe the information appearing in Anonymus' chronicles to be authentic.
His main work, the Gesta Hungarorum (“Deeds of the Magyars”), which was written in the 13th century, is kept in the National Széchényi Library. The work was translated from Latin into Hungarian by István Lethenyey in 1791, by István Mándy in 1799 and by Károly Szabó in 1860.
The information in the Gesta Hungarorum suggests that the author comes from the upper hot area and that he maintained close contact with the Aba family . The preface makes it clear that he studied in Western Europe, probably in Paris.
