The sculpture by Miklós Ligeti

The statue of Anonymus is a bronze sculpture by the Hungarian sculptor Miklós Ligeti in Budapest from 1903. It honors the hitherto unknown author of the Gesta Hungarorum , a chronicle of the Magyars from their settlement in the Danube plain in 896 to the early Middle Ages.

The statue is located in the inner city park, Stadtwäldchen , on Castle Island, in front of the northern facade of Vajdahunyad Castle. Immediately opposite is the entrance to the agricultural museum housed in it.

The statue, which appears somewhat ghostly in the twilight, shows a medieval scribe in a seated form with a flowing robe and a hood pulled deep into his face. In this way Ligeti implemented the previously open question of its identity visually. Below the inscription carved in stone:

ANONYMVS = GLORIOSISSIMI BELÆ REGIS NOTARIVS
(German: Anonymous = the scribe of the most glorious King Béla)
