Jörg Mittelsten Scheid

Jörg Mittelsten Scheid (born May 7, 1936 in Wuppertal ) is a German entrepreneur . He headed the Vorwerk Group from 1969 to 2005 . Mittelsten Scheid was also Vice President of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry , President of Eurochambres ( umbrella association of European chamber organizations) and a member of the Enterprise Policy Group of the European Commission . In his hometown he works as a patron .

Origin, school and university education

Jörg Mittelsten Scheid is a son of Werner Mittelsten Scheid (born April 26, 1904, † September 16, 1953). After his parents separated, Jörg Mittelsten Scheid moved to Bavaria with his mother and attended the Landheim Schondorf , a boarding school on the Ammersee .

He then studied law at the universities of Munich , Innsbruck , Geneva , Oxford and Würzburg . First and second state exams followed. For his PhD he spent a year doing research in India . His dissertation , published in 1970, deals with the division of India . After receiving his doctorate, which he shares with summa cum laude graduated, the target of state and international law, a habilitation and held as assistant lectures .

Jörg Mittelsten Scheid broke off his scientific career in 1966. Instead, he followed a request from his uncle Erich Mittelsten Scheid and joined the Wuppertal company Vorwerk & Co. KG as the great-grandson of company founder Carl Vorwerk . In 1969 he took over the management of the company as a personally liable partner .

Under his leadership, which lasted until the end of 2005, Vorwerk developed "from a production-oriented medium-sized company to a global service and trading group". The pillars of success include, in particular, the initially completed reduction in the number of products without loss of sales, the concentration on direct sales and the internationalization of the company . Vorwerk's 1966 turnover was 315 million DM , in the 2005 financial year the group turnover reached 2.2 billion euros . The milestones in the company's development included the establishment of Hygienic Service Gebäudereinigung und Umweltpflege GmbH (later called HECTAS ) in 1974 , the takeover of Lux Asia Pacific (direct sales organization of Electrolux ) in 2001 and the takeover of Jafra Cosmetics in 2004 .

At the beginning of 2006, Jörg Mittelsten Scheid moved to the head of the Advisory Board of Vorwerk & Co. KG and held this position until the end of 2012. Since then he has been an honorary chairman of the Advisory Board. In-house he is also known as “Dr. Jörg ”.

Association and advisory activities

  • Jörg Mittelsten Scheid was President of the Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1985 to 1997 . Since 1997 he has been honorary president of this chamber.
  • From 1988 to 2001 he was Vice President of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry .
  • From 1990 to 1991 he was a member of the German government's tax reform commission .
  • From 1993 to 1997 he was a member of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business .
  • In 1996 the CDU appointed him to its commission on the “future of the tax system”.
  • At the beginning of 1997 the general assembly of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in North Rhine-Westphalia elected him President and representative of the North Rhine-Westphalian chambers on the board of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry . He held this office until early 2001.
  • In 1998 Jörg Mittelsten Scheid was unanimously elected President of Eurochambres . He headed this umbrella organization of European chamber organizations until 2001. Before being elected President, he was vice-president of this association.
  • He was also a member of the Enterprise Policy Group , the European Commission's SME Advisory Board.

Values, honorary positions and commitment

Jörg Mittelsten Scheid announced in 1995 that he was shaped by the “ pietistic attitude” of his family and that he assumed the “ social obligation of capital ”. These attitudes would have an impact on his voluntary activities. These activities and his civic engagement include:

  • From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the University Council of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .
  • Since 2006, he has been a member of the jury of the German Entrepreneur Award, which honors the entrepreneurial achievements of medium-sized companies .
  • In 2010, the entrepreneur from Wuppertal and the Institute for Educational Research at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal launched the initiative Awakening the joy of learning under the patronage of Christina Rau . Jörg Mittelsten Scheid is a member of the jury that honors projects and concepts that serve to inspire pupils to learn in schools.
  • With a donation, the entrepreneur financed the Jörg Mittelsten Scheid program of the Carl Duisberg Society . It served to promote work or study-related stays abroad.
  • He and his family donated the funds (3.15 million euros) to build a new penguin facility, which was opened in the Wuppertal Zoo in March 2009.
  • Jörg Mittelsten Scheid provides the International Organ Competition Wuppertal of the Cologne University of Music and Dance with the cash prizes.
  • He donated for the construction of the Theater am Engelsgarten in Wuppertal, which was completed in 2014.
  • In 2015 he resigned from the CDU because the party would no longer stand for fair performance; he feels "uncomfortable" with it
  • On his 80th birthday in 2016, he and his family made a donation of 1.5 million euros to his hometown. The funds went to the Bergische Universität Wuppertal (funding of the Dr. Jörg Mittelsten Scheid guest professorship for ten years), to the city's zoo (start-up funding for the construction of a new facility for threatened Asian species), the Wuppertal movement (redesign of the Hackenberg garden) as well as the Kindertal campaign (support for Wuppertal children and young people from poor and disadvantaged families).

Awards and honors

Family and wealth

On December 29, 1988 Jörg Mittelsten Scheid married Vivica Charlotte Natalie Countess zu Stolberg-Wernigerode in a civil ceremony, the church wedding followed on May 27, 1989. Jörg Mittelsten Scheid has four children.

The assets of the Mittelsten Scheid family were estimated in October 2013 in the special edition of the manager magazineList of the 500 richest Germans ” at 1.4 billion euros. The family reached number 87.
