Christina Rau born Delius (born October 30, 1956 in Bielefeld ) is a German political scientist and widow of the former Federal President Johannes Rau (1931-2006).

Life

Her father was the Bielefeld textile manufacturer ( CA Delius and sons ) Eduard Delius (1922–2013), her mother Christa Delius b. Heinemann (1928–2016) was the daughter of Gustav Heinemann and his wife Hilda Heinemann , in whose house Christina Delius met her future husband Johannes Rau as a child. At the age of eleven she went to boarding school at her own request , first in Switzerland to the High Alpine Institute in Ftan and later to Gordonstoun in Scotland . Prince Andrew, Duke of York , was one of her classmates. She later studied political science , economics and history at the University College of Wales and King's College . There she did "war studies" and earned a Master of Arts with a thesis on "Civil Defense and Nuclear Balance".

On August 9, 1982, when she was almost 26, she married Johannes Rau, 25 years her senior, who was then Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia. She then renounced her plan to do a doctorate on the subject of “The German Question from a British Perspective”. The marriage resulted in three children, Anna Christina (born December 19, 1983), Philip Immanuel (born January 28, 1985) and Laura Helene (born November 10, 1986). The family's residence was Wuppertal - Elberfeld , after the election of Johannes Rau as Federal President from June 1999 Berlin .

Christina Rau did not seek her own political office, but instead supported her husband in his tasks, accompanied him on many state visits and took over various patronages from her predecessor, in particular through UNICEF Germany, the Müttergenesungswerk , the Federal Association of Organ Transplants, the German Children and Youth Foundation and the youth red cross . Since 1999 she has been visiting AIDS orphans in South Africa , children in homes in Romania , former child soldiers in Sierra Leone and mine victims in Cambodia .

When the office of President was handed over to Horst Köhler on July 1, 2004 , his wife Eva Luise Köhler took over the patronage.

In June 2006 she accepted the Georg Meistermann Prize from the City of Wittlich Foundation, which was posthumously awarded to her husband . On May 26, 2009, she inaugurated the old people's home named after her husband in Moers .

Christina Rau is an avid athlete. Her hobbies include horse riding , gliding , skiing , snowboarding , surfing , diving and skydiving .
